Elkford, situated in the SE corner of the B.C. Rocky Mountains, is known as The Wilderness Capital of BC.

Elk along the highway is a common sight, and mule deer in the city is an everyday occurance.

At 1,300 m or 4,265 ft above sea level, Elkford is BC's highest community.

Not only is this area in close proximity to a variety of hiking trails, lakes and rivers for fishing, beautiful waterfalls and landscapes, it is only a 45 minute drive to the popular skiing resort of Fernie.

Fernie Alpine Resort has a reputation for excellent powder skiing.

The nearest commercial airport is found in Cranbrook/Kimberley. There are daily jet services to Kamloops, the Okanagan, Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton.

Elkford has a temperate climate with warm summers and relatively mild winters. The winters tend to have alot of snow.

Because of it's high elevation, the winter cold periods in this area aren't as severe and the summer heat is kept from reaching extreme temperatures.

'Must see' areas are Elk Lakes Provincial Park, Josephine Falls and Greenhills Viewpoint.

Elkford is the outdoor enthusiasts dream.

Snowmobiling is a very popular winter sport in Elkford. It is considered a 'snowmobiler's paradise' and offers sledding that ranges from family outings to breathtaking mountain challenges.

In summer, there is a local 9-hole golf course, and over 40 km of maintained hiking and biking trails.

Community highlights include 'Wildcat Days' on the July 1st long-weekend, and a popular Dog-Sled Race in February, with competitors coming from all over. There are 10-dog, 6-dog, and 4-dog sled teams. This is one place you can also see 'Skijoring', where a cross-country skier is harnessed behind one or two sled-dogs.
