Kaneohe is located near Kaneohe Bay on the east side (the windward side) of the island of Oahu .. 20 minutes from Honolulu.

Kaneohe Bay is a large lagoon that is protected from the ocean by the only true barrier reef in Hawaii.

The sheltered bay has many productive fishponds and vibrant coral reefs.

Without spoiling the beauty of the area there have been many changes to the Bay due to dredging and the construction of retaining walls for residential development.

Within the town is Hoomalugia Botanical Garden, so large that guided hikes are offered on a daily basis. This 400 acre tract is part of the Hawaiian Botanical Garden system.

Offshore is Moke O' Loe, commonly called Coconut Island, famous for the opening shot in the TV show "Gilligan's Island".

Kaneohe Bay offers Kaneohe Beach Park, Heeia State Park and Laenani Beach Park. The water is safe all year round.

Nearby Heeia State Park is designated as an "interpretative park" offering programs to the community and visitors with an interest in Hawaiian beliefs and culture.
