Sunset Beach, near Waimea Bay, is only a 7 to 8 minute drive from the historic whaling town of Haleiwa, which is the main town on the North Shore of Oahu.

Sunset Beach runs for 2 miles and is one of the longest white sand beaches on Oahu.

The beach is a series of well known surfing spots, each with it's own name and characteristics.

The Banzai Pipeline is one of the world's most famous surfing spots.

The famous tubelike effect of the breaking waves comes from a shallow reef just offshore which forces the waves to rise dramatically and quickly.

This forces the crest forward to create "The Pipeline."

Ehukai Beach County Park is a great location to watch the action on the Pipeline and Pupukea.

At Sunset Beach County Park itself you should be aware of the very dangerous "Sunset Rip", a notorious offshore current that grabs people every year.

Fortunately there is a lifeguard tower here.

Summertime is generally safe.

In summer the beach is popular for it's gentle summer waves.

The water is crystal clear and the snorkeling is great!
