Lovina is a quiet coastal town on the North Bali coastline
west of the city of Singaraja. It is a relatively new name coined in the 1950s by a local Buleleng Regency official with a good eye for future tourism-based development. Beach front accommodation, vacation rentals, condo rentals and villa rentals are available here now, replacing the shacks along the beach.
Lovina consists of seven traditional villages
, which all slightly merge into one on a 10 km stretch of the main road which hugs the north coast to the west of Singaraja: Temukus, Kalibukbuk, Anturan, Pemaron, Tukad Mungga, Banyualit and Kaliasem. Kalibukuk is the main hub of this area and is often thought of "Lovina town centre". Each village has a range of accommodation, vacation rental, villa rental and condo rental choices, from luxurious lodging to budget stays.
The whole stretch of coast here is fringed by quite narrow black sand beaches
, which are accessed by a multitude of small lanes which run perpendicular to the east-west coast road. Accommodations, vacation rentals and villa rentals are situated within walking distance if not on the stretches of beach. The beaches are generally safe for swimming
, and the waters of Bali's north coast, in direct contrast to the crashing surf of the south, are relatively calm.
Diving, snorkeling and dolphin watching are the main activities
, but it is also an area in which to relax and take in a very slow, traditional pace of life. It can get a little crowded in July and August. So explore the Balinese seaside villas on offer and book well in advance.
Located west of Lovina you’ll find Air Banjar Hot Springs, it is an enchanting hot springs with stone carved mouths gushing water among a lush garden setting.
A nominal entrance fee is charged. Go in the morning if you want some peace and quiet, you will have the place to yourself if you get there before 9am.
Dolphin watching trips leave early each morning and are great fun for the kids, despite the criticism that the boats tend to outnumber the dolphins. Snorkeling is possible on the reef just offshore from Kalibukbuk.
Lovina is lucky to have several spa facilities.
While a little more low key than the spas to the south, the service is excellent and the prices, being much less than the opulent spas in the south, are an excellent value and well worth it.
Lovina offers visitors a relaxing, seaside vacation drenched in Balinese history with spectacular accommodations, vacation rentals and villa rentals to suit all types of travelers.
