Capileira is the highest and most northerly of the three villages in the gorge of the Poqueira river in the La Alpujarra district
of the province of Granada, in Spain. It has developed a significant tourist trade, acting as a center for walking and for accessing the mountains especially Mulhacén, generally treated as a two-day climb from Capileira. This has created many wonderful accommodations and lodging choices ranging from spacious vacation rentals and villa rentals to cozier condo rentals and apartment rentals.
The village has good facilities for visitors including a number of restaurants, a market on Tuesdays
, accommodations, vacation rentals, apartment rentals and villa rentals, but retains a typical Alpujarran character especially away from the main road.
The town’s architecture is characterized by 250 years of Moorish occupation and its culture by centuries more of hardship; it has developed today into a pretty, friendly place
, popular with visitors seeking remote beauty coupled with good facilities. The villas here are beautiful, traditional Alpujarran
style; white-washed with beams over the tiny, steep streets, and houses covered in flowers and pot-plants. There are several accommodation, vacation rental, condo rental, and apartment rental and villa rental choices in this typical style.
While it has embraced rural tourism with enthusiasm and has a host of small bars and restaurants to serve visitors, craft shops and even night spots to suit differing tastes, it remains a village with a strong identity
, dedicated to the well-being of its own families. br/>
At weekends the main Plaza is the province of local children playing, accompanied by their mothers, grandparents, dogs and all. Making this a great people watching spot and to get to know the locals more.
Capileira is situated on the southern skirts of the Sierra Nevada where it enjoys a Mediterranean climate without the humidity that pervades the coast.
It affords a relief and escape from the heat of high summer and perfect walking temperatures in spring and autumn. There can be terrific sunny days in winter, too, but being at high altitude it is cold at night so hearty log fires are in order.
Lively in summer, mysterious in winter, Capileira truly is a magical place with equally magical accommodation, vacation rental, and apartment rental and villa rental options.
