Chatel Censoir is in the heart of Burgundy, north-central France
Chatel Censoir has many places to cycle and walk in the meadows and forests, or you can visit the 12th century collégiale church on the cliff overlooking the Port or go wine-tasting and fishing along the canal. Although it feels wonderfully relaxing and a million miles from anywhere, Chatel Censoir is just two and a half hours by train from Paris offering the possibility to explore further afield.
Make time to climb up the hill to the very historic little village at the top of the hill, there are picture postcard little lanes to explore, and wonderful views. Visit the authentic bar in the main square with its tables on the pavement terrace where you can catch your breath after the climb!
Visit Vezelay, a World Heritage site just 15 minutes away by taxi for exceptional views from the hilltop Basilica St Madeleine, a meeting place for the Crusaders on their way to the Holy Lands. Include wine tasting at the many 'caves'. There are local restaurants here but in St-Pere-sous-Vezelay there is the world famous restaurant L'Esperance for a very special evening of gastronomique french cuisine by Marc Meneau.
The region is famous for its cuisine, wine, architecture, art and waterways. Charolais cattle grazing in meadows contrast with small hillside vineyards. This is a place this is as well known for its Burgundy cuisine as its 17th and 18th century villages and medieval towns.
The Nivernais Canal is reputed to be the most picturesque canal in France, dotted with villas, and intertwining with the River Yonne creating an idylic, relaxing cruise from Chatel Censoir in the heart of the Burgundian countryside passing through medieval towns. The River Yonne which meanders alongside the Nivernais canal was used for floating timber from the Morvan forests to Paris for fuel until the end of the 19th century. At the end of the 18th century the canal was started to transport wood and cargo. Today, it primarily carries tourist traffic.
