Gaucín is a village in the mountains of Andalusia in southern Spain
, inland from Marbella, Puerto Banus
, and not far from Ronda

The village has a population of approximately 2,000. It lies about 600 meters (approx. 2000 feet) above sea level in the Sierra del Hacho, dominated by the Castillo del Aguila (Eagle's Castle)
, originally a Roman stronghold, expanded by the Arabs. Even with so few locals, there is no shortage of charming accommodations and lodging ranging from condo rentals and apartment rentals to larger vacation rentals and villa rentals.
Gaucín is known for its spectacular views of Gibraltar
, the Strait of Gibraltar and Morocco
, as well the surrounding mountain scenery. Due to its mountaintop location, it had commanding sweeping views to the Rif Mountains of North Africa.

The center of the village is a tangle of narrow, twisting streets and was once a haven for brandy and tobacco smugglers who travelled through the surrounding hills.
Up until recently, most villas had no running water and one light bulb. They are a far cry from the refurbished villas today which are fully equipped and offer wonderful accommodations, vacation rentals, apartment rentals and villa rentals.
Festivals and celebrations not to be missed in Gaucin include a large carnival features "chirigotas", fantastically-costumed groups that sing of current events in a humorous way.
A party held on the main square with an orchestra goes on until dawn. Also the "feria", which lasts three days, is a celebration of the town itself and is held annually in early August. It is complete with a variety of carnival rides and games booths. The festivities also include a large pavilion where one can eat, drink, and watch musicians perform.
The area surrounding Gaucin is stunning in any direction. Particularly in winter and spring and makes for a very enjoyable trip.
For such a small town there is a very good selection of bars and restaurants serving international cuisine, a testament to the areas appeal to tourists. Rare birds and an abundance of other wildlife and flora make the area popular with nature lovers, ramblers and artists.
