Grosseto is one of the few Italian cities that can still boast a city wall which is entirely intact and in good condition. A 16th century hexagonal-shaped wall built during the Medici era encloses the historic center of the city. The impressive Medici Fortress is at the North-East embankment of the walls, and was built in the second half of the 16th century. The Medicean Walls have long lost their defensive function, and are one of the not-to-miss attractions in Grosseto today.

Within the walls of this incredible city are several marvelous historical treasures including the Church of San Francesco. This Romanesque-Gothic cathedral was built by the Benedectines in the 13th century and then restored in 1903. It contains an abundant collection of artworks, and the Cross by Duccio di Boninsegna (1289).

The Museo Civico Archeologico e d’Arte della Maremma is considered the most prestigious archaeological museum in Southern Tuscany. It preserves one of the best collections in Italy of Etruscan art. A section of the museum is devoted to findings from the Etruscan civilization, while another houses Roman statues and artifacts. The museum also houses a series of vestiges from the prehistoric settlements in Maremma, including an interesting art collection from the Middle Ages. Rent holiday lodging directly from owners of villas, condo rentals, vacation rentals, villa rentals and apartment rentals in Grosseto, Tuscany through the Owner Direct vacation rental website.
