Como is in Lombardy, 45km North of Milan and only a few miles from the Swiss border. Once an area completely covered by glaciers, today the Adda river makes its long 313 km journey from the Swiss alps into Lake Como, Italy forming its distinctive "upside-down Y" shape. At 410 m deep and an area of 146 km squared, it's Europe's deepest and 3rd largest lake.

At the heart of Como's walled Old Town, Piazza San Fedele has many 400-year-old buildings and the basilica, one of the masterpieces of the maestri comacini (masters of Como). At the top of Via Cantù you'll see the old wall's most spectacular standing tower, the Porta Vittoria. Nearby is the very austere church of San Abbondio. Climb the hill behind it and go to the top of the Baradello Tower for a lovely view of the entire lake. The ringing bells of the cathedral can be heard in accommodation inside the old town.

Take the ferry or hydrofoil from Como and explore Tremezzo, another lovely lakeside town with spectacular accommodation. There's a classic lakeside promenade, as well as many wonderful old villas (some of which have been converted to hotels and villa rentals). But it may be Varenna that's the most picturesque town on the lake with some of the most authentic vacation rentals and villa rentals.

On the southern shore is Bellagio, la perla del lago (the pearl of the lake). Many consider this to be the most beautiful town in all of Europe, due to its narrow cobbled streets, breathtaking views, impeccable homes and glorious villa gardens. Because they are so tiny and so famous, Bellagio and Varenna get crowded very easily, so accommodations, apartment rentals, vacation rentals and condo rentals get booked up very quickly. A ferry trip across the lake to Menaggio or Cernobbio or Como town, all of which make enchanting bases and easier to find an available vacation rental, apartment rental, villa rental or condo rental.

If you want to relax, then just drift around these spectacular towns, steeped in history, dine on the finest Italian cuisine; watch the locals go about their business and the watchers watching everyone else. However, if you wish to walk off some of the excess catch the funiculare up to Brunate and then take the footpath up to Monte Boletto. Como's waterfront is the focus of life in the town.
