Lauderdale-By-The-Sea, South Florida
Known as the Beach Diving Capital of South Florida, the Lauderdale-By-The-Sea town is proud of its great beach diving on our nearby reefs, its Blue Wave beaches and partnership in Florida's Scenic Highways Program!
South Florida is one of the most popular places in the world to scuba dive. Unlike the Florida Keys, where the reefs are only accessible by boat, the Town's coral reefs -- some located within 100 yards of the beach -- can be reached using a pair of fins and a mask. Recognizing the popularity of the Town's reefs with local and out-of-town divers, the Broward County Commission in September 1997 declared Lauderdale-By-The-Sea the Shore Dive Capital of South Florida. The Town's great beach diving was recently featured on ScubaNation TV, a Fox Sun Sports program.
The Town is home to BugFest-By-The-Sea,
a week-long dive festival centered around Florida's annual two-day lobster mini-season. BugFest includes photo and wreck-diving workshops, a lobster cook out, lobster chef competition, reef clean-up and the Great Florida Bug Hunt, where divers can win $10,000 in cash and prizes.
The Town also has a unique artificial reef project powered by two solar-buoys, which help accelerate the rate of coral growth. Located about 700 feet offshore just south of the Datura Avenue portal, the Biorock structure was deployed in 2011.
If you dive or snorkel our reefs, remember to exercise caution by always avoiding diving or swimming near Anglin's Pier at Commercial Boulevard. You must also display the red-and-white-striped "Diver's Down" flag. It's not just good safety advice, it's the law.
