East of Maunaloa and in the centre of the island is Kaunakakai (Beach Landing) This tiny port town is the economic and government centre of Molokai. However, it has no 'night life', as there are no bars or nightspots. Papohaku Beach, one of the largest white sand beaches on the islands is within easy reach of Maunaloa on the western shore of Molokai. Close to Papohaku is the 18 hole championship golf course at Kaluakoi.
Molokai's population is low and includes the highest percentage of people of native Hawaiian ancestry of any of the islands. Because of their friendliness to visitors, Molokai is known as "the Friendly Isle." It is considered by many to be culturally the most Hawaiian of the six major islands.
