Maunaloa, on the west end of Molokai was, according to legend, the first place Hawaiians received hula instruction. Maunaloa town is being revitalized with plantation-style architecture reminiscent of the gentle and leisurely lifestyle of Old Hawaii. Surrounded by open pastureland that overlook panoramic ocean vistas, Maunaloa vacation rentals offer a spectacular setting.
East of Maunaloa and in the centre of the island is Kaunakakai (Beach Landing) This tiny port town is the economic and government centre of Molokai. However, it has no 'night life', as there are no bars or nightspots. Papohaku Beach, one of the largest white sand beaches on the islands is within easy reach of Maunaloa on the western shore of Molokai. Close to Papohaku is the 18 hole championship golf course at Kaluakoi.
Molokai's population is low and includes the highest percentage of people of native Hawaiian ancestry of any of the islands. Because of their friendliness to visitors, Molokai is known as "the Friendly Isle." It is considered by many to be culturally the most Hawaiian of the six major islands. It doesn't matter if you choose Molokai accommodations in the western section, or prefer home rentals in the east; you are never far from adventure as the island is just the right size to drive in one day.
The least developed of the Hawaiian Islands, Molokai is only 20 minutes by air from Hawaii's most populous islands, Maui and Oahu. It is a quiet island that offers a unique introduction to the gentle rhythm of South Seas life.
While staying at Maunaloa you can easily tour the whole island. Winding country roads beckon sightseers via off road tour and taxi services or you can explore in your own rental vehicle. In contrast to the western beach and golf course atmosphere much of the island's eastern end is dense wilderness, thrusting mountains and deep, green valleys.
Kalaupapa Peninsula offers a wonderful day hike on the well maintained 2.9 mile mule trail complete with 26 switchbacks. Horseback riding and mountain biking are available at the Mokokai Ranch.
