About Maui's North Shore
The array of locally owned island shops and dining establishments offer warm hospitality and friendly service, with an atmosphere unlike any other town on the island. While not exactly off the beaten path, Paia offers a different feel from the hotel bordered Lahaina and condo bordered Kihei. In our small country town, people seem oblivious to the fact that bustling Lahaina and Kihei towns share the same island, providing a quiet slow paced lifestyle and attitude which visitors appreciate.
Our 39 unique shops make Paia a paradise for shoppers who are looking for the unusual, exotic or unique to take home. Our visitor enter a world of wonderful, unfamiliar merchandise that is often unavailable elsewhere on Maui or on the mainland.
Baldwin Beach Park has one of the most beautiful white sand beaches on Maui and offers full facilities. On weekdays, it is almost always uncrowded.
Ho’okipa Beach Park – the world’s best windsurfing - Only minutes away is Hookipa Beach Park, windsurfing capital of the world. In winter, monster surf rolls into the North Shore, with wave after wave and winds rolling in, making Hookipa a world class windsurf and kite surfing destination. Several professional competitions are held each year at Hookipa which attracts competitors from all over the world. Wave jumping and aerial flips are not unusual to see. The spectacle of it is awesome.
About Maui's North Shore - Owner Direct Vacation Rentals: The "North Shore" of Maui includes the small towns of Paia, Haiku and Pauwela. Maui's "North Shore" is located south-east of Kahului and the airport, midway between Hana and Wailea and Kaanapali. There are many great beaches within walking distance of Paia. The lifestyle is laid back and centers around outdoor activities.
Kuau Cove is located between Paia and Hookipa (about 1 mile outside Paia). This is an excellent windsurfing location. The water is warm, the views are beautiful, and the sun shines almost every day. In the summer the wind blows 15-25 knots and the rest of the year still offers pretty good sailing. Winter brings the big surf, with the occasional set of double mast-high waves rolling in. This is one of the World's most popular windsurfing areas. At world famous Ho'okipa Beach Park, surfers, windsurfers, bodyboarders, and swimmers come to spend the day in this beautiful spot. The waves here can reach up to 30 feet high in the winter months.
Today, Paia is hustling and bustling with a different kind of energy. Since the old sugarmill shut down in 2000 (one of the last few in the state), the economy has turned to tourism, windsurfing and surfing.
