Paestum is the classical Roman name of a major Graeco-Roman city in the Campania region of Italy.
It is located in the north of Cilento, near the coast about 85 km south east of Naples
in the province of Salerno. It’s officially also named Capaccio-Paestum. Agropoli is located 10km south and 12km way is Capacchio. The surrounding area has many accommodations, vacation rentals, condo rentals, apartment rentals and villa rentals to offer visitors.
The main features of the site are the standing remains of three major temples in Doric style, dating from the first half of the 6th century BC.
These were dedicated to Hera and Athena, although they have traditionally been identified as a basilica and temples of Neptune and Ceres. The city of Paestum covers an area of approximately 120 hectares. It is only the 25 hectares that contain the three main temples that have been excavated.
The other 95 hectares remain on private land and have not been excavated. The city is surrounded by defensive walls that still stand today. Villas and holiday lodging close by have breathtaking views over the site.
Make sure to book you vacation rental, condo rental, apartment rental or villa rental with a view.
Paestum is also renowned for its painted tombs, mainly belonging to the period of the Lucanian rule, while only one of them dates to the Greek period. The burial monument was named Tomb of the Diver
(Italian: Tomba del tuffatore) after the enigmatic scene, depicted on the covering slab, of a lonely young man diving into a stream of water.
only 10km away, has some tombs predating the Byzantine period were recently found, also houses the medieval ruins of San Francesco's monastery, and the Churches of the Holy Mary of Constantinople (16th century), San Marco, and San Francesco. The beaches of Trentova Bay contribute to make Agropoli an important seaside resort
with wonderful accommodations, vacation rentals, condo rentals, apartment rentals and villa rentals. It also has also a large tourist port, connected by ferries to Capri, Ischia, Salerno and Naples.
Paestum is located 44km away from the Cilento National Park and shows the unknown side of Campania; pristine beaches, sheer rock cliffs puckered with caves, series of mountains cut by live water streams.
The beauty of this area has been preserved for centuries thanks to its isolation due in large part to the challenging terrain. The Cilento has a variety of landscapes to be enjoyed with spectacular accommodation, vacation rental, apartment rental and villa rental options to suit all visitors.
