It is a small town of great charm with the outermost houses following the line of the original walls and incorporate parts of the walls into their structures. Panicale still has two ancient gates and previously was surrounded by a moat.
Two or three concentric streets spiral in to the Piazza Grande. Panicale has a population of 500 and can be entered through two gates: Porta Fiorentina, used when arriving from Florence and Porta Perugina used when arriving from Perugia. There are a total of seven churches, not all of them in use. The largest church, San Michele, is used on Sunday mornings for celebrating mass in Italian. The best starting point for visiting Panicale is the Church of Saint Sebastian
which houses the very beautiful fresco of 'The Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian' by Perugino.
When staying a vacation rental, condo rental, villa rental or apartment rental, you can be sure that the buildings are truly historic.
Enjoy some quirky events and festivals
including Game of Ruzzulone which is a competition of ancient tradition where cheeses wrapped in shreds of cloth are thrown at terrific speed. From June to September this little town plays host to Musica Insieme Panicale, which are concerts featuring ancient, Baroque, Romanesque, contemporary and avant-garde music. Stay in Panicale’s various lodgings, accommodation options and historic villas and enjoy Perugia’s event and fesitvals. It is famous for chocolate and holds its chocolate festival
, Eurochocolate, in mid-October. The city hosts a huge international Jazz Festival, the Umbria
Jazz Festival, in July and MusicFestPerugia, two weeks of classical music performances in historic monuments and churches in August.
Called the green heart of Italy
, Umbria sports an abundance of attractive hill towns, and Umbrian cuisine is some of the best in Italy
. Stay in any of Panicale’s local vacation rentals, villa rentals or apartment rentals and explore the surrounding area. One of the best things to do in Perigia is to wander through the narrow streets and along the walls at the edge of town for views of the valley.
Perugia's top attractions include Piazza IV Novembre, a large, open square where locals and visitors congregate. In the center is a beautiful fountain, the Fontana Maggiore. Corso Vannucci is the main pedestrian street and is lined with elegant shops, bars, and eating places.
Perugia itself has its own wonderful accommodations, vacation rentals, villa rentals and apartment rentals.
