If you love wine and are heading to Europe this fall, consider these three fabulous destinations where tourists have the opportunity to participate in the grape harvests. Visitors to these regions can experience the camaraderie of the harvest as well as the excitement of the materialization of a year's long labor.
Poggibonsi is set in the center of the Valdelsa Valley in the province of Sienna, Tuscany. If you want a chance to experience true Italian culture, visit Poggibonsi during the second weekend of October when the entire population takes part in an event known as Pigio.
Everyone, tourists included, can take part in a grape crushing competition and enjoy the fun celebration with live music and entertainment, traditional folklore, wine tasting, wine and more wine. Just remember to wear something that you don't mind getting a little, or maybe a lot, dirty. Women hitch up their skirts and the men roll up their pants, but any way you look at it, this is a fun but rather messy extravaganza.
