Official Big Bear Lake Visitor Information:
Big Bear Lake Has an Array of Winter-Related Recreation Activities That Appeal to All Ages and Skill Levels:
There is a “winter wonderland” that is nestled 7,000 miles above sea level in the San Bernardino Mountains called Big Bear Lake. From December through March a collection of snowmen and snow angels greet incoming visitors to Southern California’s premier winter playground. The genuine winter getaway allows visitors to escape and play in the snow.

Big Bear Lake has two premier ski resorts. Snow Summit, the more laid back of the two, is designed for traditional skiers with a focus on the quality alpine experience. Bear Mountain attracts every level from first-time snowboarders to freestyle enthusiasts.

However, skiers and snowboarders are not the only ones taking advantage of the snow-covered mountains during the winter season. Many people choose Big Bear Lake for the array of winter-related recreation activities that appeal to all ages and skill levels, including snowshoeing, downhill inner tubing, cross-country skiing, backcountry off-roading, sledding, and horseback riding.

Children who visit Big Bear Lake can experience the thrill of inner tubing down snow packed slopes, which are specifically designed for good times. Parents too, can relive their youthful days and glide down the smooth vertical incline for a fun-filled ride. Inner tubing in the winter wonderland is the ultimate outdoor family outing that creates memories that last a lifetime. There are two fabulous snow play areas in Big Bear, Alpine Slide at Magic Mountain and Big Bear Snow Play.

Taking a trek into the open country via snowshoes or cross-country skis is one of the best ways to enjoy the true bliss of Big Bear Lake’s picturesque winter scenery. This is a great way to escape the crowds and enjoy the peaceful serenity of the natural winter wonderland. Picnic lunches go hand-in-hand with snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Snowshoes and cross-country, steel edged skis can be rented at many fine retail establishments throughout Big Bear valley.

Another recreation option during the winter in Big Bear is to take a unique backcountry excursion with Big Bear Off Road Adventures. Here, passengers can enjoy a safe and comfortable ride through the deep wilderness. The heavy-duty, four-wheel drive vehicles can handle the toughest terrains, including knee-deep snow. The interpretive guided tour gives its guests an insight of Big Bear’s alpine environment, its fascinating history, and a chance to see breathtaking views of The San Bernardino Mountains and The Mojave Desert.

Another way to explore Big Bear’s peaceful winter setting is by horseback. A relaxing ride into the backwoods is a splendid way to connect with nature and enjoy the pleasantries of the fresh mountain air.
Big Bear Lake is an easy two-hour drive from most Southland cities.

Big Bear Lake Gives Visitors an Opportunity to See America’s Ultimate Symbol of Freedom: The essential American symbol that truly signifies freedom is the bald eagle. If you could see one of these magnificent birds in flight or perched high upon a forty foot pine tree, you would get a better understanding of why The United States of America has adopted the bald eagle to represent the land of the free.

From December through March visitors of Big Bear Lake can witness the majesty of bald eagles in their natural habitat. About 30 - 40 eagles migrate to Big Bear each year from Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, even as far away as Canada and Alaska. The primary reason why eagles come to Big Bear Lake is the ideal “eagleteria” conditions the lake provides, that is, warmer conditions, a lake that rarely freezes over and an abundance of small forest game, ducks and fish.

Things You Must See and Do: .....Big Bear is home to several special attractions due to the unique qualities of the area. The Big Bear Discovery Center is operated cooperatively by the U.S. Forest Service and San Bernardino National Forest Association. Guests visit the center for naturalist-led interpretive programs, evening nature lectures, hiking information and to view the changing exhibits which include every thing from native animals to fire prevention. Tours on foot or by canoe are available for the more adventuresome providing opportunities to learn about Big Bear waterfowl, aquatic and animal life. The Adventure Outpost is an onsite retail store which offers one-of-a-kind gifts.

Also unique to Big Bear is the Moonridge Zoo, a 2.5 acre facility for animals wounded in the wilderness. The area fires of 1959 brought about the need to house injured animals that could be treated and returned to the forest. For those healthy but non-releasable birds and animals, the Moonridge Zoo became their protective new home, and the Moonridge Animal Park was “born”. At least 200 injured wild birds and animals are treated annually at the park, and the majority are rehabilitated and released back into the wild. Expansion efforts are currently underway.

The Big Bear Solar Observatory (BBSO) takes advantage of the excellent climatic conditions of Big Bear to study the Sun. The observatory is located in the middle of Big Bear Lake to reduce image distortion, and turbulent motions in the air are also reduced by the smooth flow of the wind across the lake. These conditions, combined with the usually cloudless skies over Big Bear Lake and the clarity of the air at this elevation, make the observatory a premier site for solar observations.

No trip to Big Bear is complete without a visit to the Big Bear Valley Historical Museum. The museum has many exhibits that begin with the Indian period and include an 1875 log cabin, gold mining artifacts, cattle ranching and lumbering exhibits, and many other historical artifacts.

We've Got it All in Big Bear:.....Spring fever brings hiking, biking, horseback riding, off-roading, golfing, botating, waterskiing, parasailing, fishing, kayaking, and canoeing activities. Big Bear Lake is Southern California's premier recreational lake. It has approximately 22 miles of shoreline and is seven miles long. When the colors start to change, and the temperatures drop, Big Bear begins to "think snow". Downhill and cross country skiing, snowboarding, and moonlight snowshoeing move to the top of the "must do" list. Big Bear Mountain Resorts offer it all for both skier and snowboarder.

Big Bear Activities:..... Hiking, Fishing, Off Road Driving, Camping and Winter Sports are a sample of what can be enjoyed under our blue skies. Extreme sports enthusiasts will experience the intensity of high altitude training in our clean alpine air.
We are convenient to most of Southern California.

Big Bear Tourism:..... Big Bear is nestled in the San Bernardino National Forest, home to towering oaks, forest pines, hundreds of miles of hiking trails and the San Gorgonio Wilderness, the highest peak (11,501 ft.) between the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range and the Mexican Border. Big Bear is defined by its rustic traditions, rich history, and pristine views. Big Bear has abundant recreational opportunities, art galleries, a community arts theatre, a performing arts center, a multitude of special attractions and special events and is host to two of Southern California's premier ski resorts.
