West Coast Retreat Cradled on a peninsula overlooking Johnstone Strait on an acre of lush land, the lodge lies on the south shore of Cormorant Island, in a glacier-carved waterway with Vancouver Island to the south and the rugged mainland coast to the north. Accessible only by boat or ferry, Alert Bay (pop. 1400) is the oldest community on north Vancouver Island, and Johnstone Strait is home to the largest population of orca whales in Western North America. Eagles nest in our backyard. Activities include fishing, kayaking, whale and grizzly bear watching, the Big Tree Trail and First Nations culture. |

The Lodge sits on the south shore of Cormorant Island, overlooking Johnstone Strait. Local fishing and pleasure craft and sometimes orcas can be seen from the Lodge. Across the Strait from the Lodge, the Vancouver Island Mountain Range rises from the shore of Vancouver Island, providing a stunning mountain backdrop to our ocean view. The east side of the Lodge overlooks the eastern arm of the Strait and a children's playground. The west side of the lodge overlooks the western arm of the Strait and a small house. The north (rear) side of the lodge is forested.

Distances
• A 1,000-metre paved runway is available on Cormorant Island. Arrangements can be made to fly with Eagle Air Services from Vancouver directly to Alert Bay.
Scheduled flights depart daily from Vancouver to Port Hardy. Air Carriers from Vancouver are Pacific Coastal Airlines and Air Canada. A limousine service is available from Port Hardy to Port McNeill where a connection can be made to the ferry to Alert Bay.
• Golf: can be reached by driving for 45 minute(s). Golfers can head to the public, 9-hole, Par 35 Seven Hills Golf & Country Club in nearby Port Hardy, the northernmost golf course on Vancouver Island. Seven Hills offers the golfer meandering fairways and undulating greens, with scenic views of the North Island Mountains. Port Hardy is a 45 minute drive north from Port McNeill. • Shopping and Dining: can be reached by walking for 20 minute(s). Several restaurants are available in Alert Bay, the nearest one being at the local hotel. There is also a grocery store, liquor store, post office and RCMP detachment in town, all about a 15 minute walk away. The hospital is 2.5 kilometers away. First Nations crafts are sold in local shops and during the summer months ceremonial dancing is held at the Big House. • Beach gradient is gradual for a short distance. Beach surface is large pebbles. The beach lies directly outside the lodge. One must first cross Fir Street, a very quiet, single lane street, and then descend to the beach. As with all properties on the south shore of Cormorant Island, the beach is located on the south side of Fir Street, which runs past the Lodge. Guests can launch boats from the beach, but should bring them up to the Lodge after use. The water is clear and cold and the tides can be strong which discourages swimming for some people.
