Distances
• Shopping and Dining: can be reached by walking for 20 minute(s). This is a rural area, located on the Hilo side of the Big Island. The nearest shopping is in villages four and six miles away (Pahoa and Kea'au). Both towns have excellent restaurants. Pahoa has a Farmer's Market on Sundays. Kea'au has a large grocery store. It is a twenty minute drive from the Hilo airport. The city of Hilo has shopping malls, restaurants, Museum, Art Gallery, ocean parks, the popular Hilo Hattie's store, and the Liliuokalani Park. On the way to Hilo you pass the Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Farm and Candy Factory, and the Panaewa Rainforest Zoo.
• Beaches, hiking and Volcano National Park are within 20 minutes in various directions. The unit is located in Hawaiian Paradise Park, between the villages of Pahoa and Kea'au. It is a 20 minute drive to the world's newest black sands beach. Wading is okay here; but only the strong, brave swimmers should attempt the surf. Beaches are only in the lower Puna area (Kehena Black Sand Beach, also Po’oiki with several surf spots). Also just outside of Hilo in the Keaukaha area are several “beach” parks with excellent snorkeling at Richardson’s. All are about 20 minutes away, just in different directions. Hiking just over an hour with the trailhead close by gets an adventurous soul to a private beach called Haena, the birthplace of Hula and today a nene goose reserve.
