| • Parking Provided: 1 Outdoor. There are parking spaces in front of the chateau and also elsewhere on the estate. Since a bus from the Lizy-sur-Ourcq station takes you to the chateau gates, you may not need a car. You can walk into Lizy, where you'll find everything anyone could want, including the station with trains to Meaux, Paris, and the world. If there are many things you want to do and see, we recommend a car to make good use of your time. We've found the best rates at carrentalexpress.com and TTcars.com. You can pick up rental cars at Charles de Gaulle or at the Gare de l'Est in Paris, on the way to la Trousse. | | • Security Safe / Locked Storage Provided. There is a locked storage bin in the cellars/cave. The caretaker can give guests a key if they want. It's a great wine cellar and extra space. On the same floor is a shared bathroom, kitchen with fireplace, and laundry. The caretaker's husband is an efficient and effective security guardian, a former policeman. |

The kitchen is what the French call an American kitchen: an alcove with fridge, sink, and appliances. The microwave functions both as an oven and as a microwave. A two-burner hot plate, wooden cutting board, and other items make the kitchen fully functional, but we don't do a lot of cooking in the apartment since the supermarket has delicious refrigerated dinners by the great chefs and terrific restaurants offering 3-course dinners with a glass of wine for €12 are all over.
1 Queen Futon Bed (sleeps 2), 1 Single Foam Mattress (sleeps 1) and 1 Single Air Mattress (sleeps 1). The Studio at the Chateau de la Trousse is a large room with French oak floors, with a bathroom off the large room and a corner kitchen with a rolling cart. Enormously high ceilings and an extremely tall window make the room sunny and airy. You look out on a bubbling fountain, gardens, 17th-century buildings, distant vistas--it's beautiful there. The foam-on-resilient-birch-slats bed is so comfortable that I replaced my high-end innerspring bed at home with one just like it. There are an antique oak dining table & chairs, cushioned wicker armchairs, CD player, lamps, antique hand-made cabinets (with extra beds, books, dishes/glasses/tableware, etc.), kitchen/bed/bath linens--everything you need.
1 Single Foam Mattress (sleeps 1). Studio guests also use the full estate--the petit salon and the private chapel in the chateau; the oubliette and huge amazing ancient pigeon cote in the stables/ecurie; the cellars. The chateau's century-and-a-half-old stone cellars contain your private, locked storage bin/wine cellar and shared facilities. The old kitchen that was used by the count's staff is still working and fascinating, with its antique sinks and fireplace plus refrigerator, stove, and other kitchen facilities. There's a half bath and laundry room in the cellars, too. I've noted a foam mattress because it's also possible to sleep in the storage bin, but I don't really recommend it. These areas are wonderful additions, however, to the studio--exploring this ancient and beautiful estate is an otherworldly experience of perfect beauty and perfect relaxation. The Comptes de Mony maintained the estate into the 1990s, and a stay at the chateau was one of the Tour de France prizes. It's a great place to spend time.
Bathroom 1 is an en suite and has toilet, shower and one basin.
The window of the Studio is broad and ceiling-high, with a window sill as wide as the chateau's stone walls. It looks through its heavy shutters, out on the front of the 1864 chateau: onto 17th-century stables and orangerie and other buildings, the bubbling fountain in the front ornamental pond whose water music you hear from your window, the rose garden, the ancient walled formal garden with the greenhouse and espaliered fruit trees, huge ancient trees, the ancient grass moat, the antique wrought-iron gates, a miles-long view of countryside and horses, and also the tennis court and heated swimming pool's patinaed walls.
• Charles de Gaulle Airport is within a 45 minute(s) drive. From Charles de Gaulle Airport to the chateau, you have the choice of train and bus transport, rental car, taxi, and concierge pick-up. • Transit: can be reached by walking less than 1 minute away. Type of transit is Bus. A bus meets the trains and drops passengers at the gates of the chateau. It also goes from the chateau into town (shopping, train station). The concierge offers taxi service in a comfortable new car at about half the price of a regular taxi. • Golf: can be reached by driving for 15 minute(s). There are more than 10 golf course(s) nearby. • Shopping and Dining: can be reached by walking for 20 minute(s). You can walk from the chateau through woods and fields to town in about 20 minutes. The drive is just a few minutes--hard to measure because it's so short. Lizy-sur-Ourcq, our nearest town, has a tourism office, an ancient church, old estates, old houses, shopping of all sorts, beauty salon, grocers, greengrocer, butcher, two excellent bakeries, pharmacies--everything. There's a great supermarket with truly everything including cheap gas, a dollar store equivalent, a cut-rate grocery, and good wine/liquor markets. There's a lovely old canal in town and we're very close to the Marne, which has inexpensive and expensive restaurants on its beautiful banks. • River is located within a 3 minute(s) drive. • Nearby Attractions: At the chateau: beautiful grounds to explore and relax in--pull out one of the lounge chairs provided and enjoy. Have your lunch outside in the cobbled courtyard or on the chateau terrace. The chateau offers a heated pool by an ancient wall, tennis court also backed by an ancient wall, landscaped pond and grounds, small forest, moat (with grass, not water), glass greenhouse, vast pleasure gardens, mature orchard, many quiet roads for walking or bicycling (some with almost no cars at all). Guests also are welcome to share the ancient kitchen in the cellar, with its fireplace and refrigerator/freezer. Shared coin-op laundry also is in the cellar.
The caretaker (24-hour security) lives in a lovely old house on site. The site offers quiet, clean air, peaceful farms nearby, skies brilliant at night from stars rather than street lights, days full of birdsong--beauty and history with total comfort.
About 1.8 miles away, the town of Lizy provides all the pleasures of French towns: wonderful food in lovely ambiance at low prices, shopping of every kind, picturesque and beautiful vistas of fields river and canal, friendly
and charming people. Nearby towns offer river-front dining and every other pleasure.
About 6 miles away, the city of Meaux offers the stately Marne River, ancient building, beautiful cityscapes, movies, shopping, restaurants, etc. Meaux' old-fashioned weekly market yields a cornucopia of treasures,
culinary and otherwise.
And Paris! Paris is an easy ride away by train or car, and the Lizy station has a taxi stand.
You're also within easy reach trip of 14 golf courses, the Champagne region (where you can taste as well as explore; 1/2 hour away), a pedagogic farm that welcomes visitors, Eurodisney (20 minutes) not to mention Versailles, Fontainebleau, Vincennes, Saint-Germaine-en-Laye, La Malmaison, Courson, Vaux-le-Vicomte, the race course at Chantilly--the Romans were here, too, leaving 2nd Century aqueducts and amphitheaters. There are too many beautiful places to explore--enough for a lifetime.
