Australasia is a term for a region of Oceania: Australia, New Zealand, and nearby islands in the Pacific Ocean. It can also be used to refer to a continent made up of Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, the eastern part of Indonesia and the nearby islands in the Pacific Ocean. Australasia includes the Australian landmass (including Tasmania), New Zealand, and Melanesia: New Guinea and neighbouring islands north and east of Australia in the Pacific Ocean. The name "Australasia" was first coined by a French geographer named Charles de Brosses in 1756. When dividing up the globe into sections, he labelled the area where Australia stands as “southern Asia” – or Australasia ("austral" is Latin for “southern”). Since de Brosses’ time the word Australasia has been changed to mean a combination of "Australia and Polynesia"
