North America is a large continent in the Earth’s northern and western hemisphere. It reaches to the Arctic Ocean in the north, the North Atlantic Ocean in the east, the Caribbean Sea in the southeast, and the North Pacific Oceanon in the south and west. South America lies to the southeast, and is connected to North America by the Isthmus of Panama. North America covers an area of about 24,500,000 square kilometres (9,500,000 sq mi), or about 5% of the Earth’s surface. The continent can be divided into four large areas: the Great Plains that reach from the Gulf of Mexico to the Canadian Arctic; the geologically young, mountainous west, which includes the Rocky Mountains, the Great Basin, California and Alaska; the relatively flat plateau of the Canadian Shield in the northeast; and the eastern region, which includes the Appalachian Mountains, the coastal plain along the Atlantic seaboard, and the Florida peninsula.
