The city is part of the district of Braganca and it is situated on the Tua River. Walking down the river you can see many beautiful gardens. We also have a train, leaving from Mirandela along the river. It's slow, mostly used for touristic purposes, but with great views. Portugal has a gastronomy which is as rich and varied as its countryside and its heritage. The traditional meals from Mirandela are 'Alheira' (a special sausage) and 'Posta' (grilled meat). 25 mins drive away we have Vila Real City. It has a spectacular location between the gorges of the Corgo and the Cabril Rivers. The Marao and the Alvao mountains overlook the city on the west side. A narrow gauge railway connects the city with Peso da Regua by the Douro River. Here we also have a Boat trip on River Douro. We are only 25 mins drive away from the lovely historic town of Vila Real. To the south of Vila Real is the stretch of the Rio Douro where most of the Port wine Lodges have their 'Quintas'. This area is the home of the wines that are produced for the Port trade with multiple terraced vineyards dominated by houses that can date back as far as to the 15th Century. The drive is most spectacular and is some 125kms long with good overnight resting places and with some 'Quintas' to visit with the opportunity to taste their port.
