The Sardinia region
Sardinia is the second large island in the Mediterranean Sea and benefits of a Mediterranean climate: warm and dry summers with a strong wind, a paradise for sailers and surfers, the winters are temperate (11-17 degrees C) with some rain showers. Also wonderful for a winter break.
The island has been for ages dominated by the surrounding peoples: Phoenicians, Carthaginians, the Roman Empire, Vandals, Berbers, and the Spanish Crown up to the 19th century when it gained an independence to become part of Italy later.
Only in 1970ties it was discovered for its natural beauty by Aga Khan who made the " Costa Smeralda" to an" elite" vacation destination with some luxury hotels for the rich and the beautiful.
It did not take long also to the average holidaymakers to choose Sardinia for their holidays when plane, sea connections improved.
Sardinia has only a few larger cities: Cagliari, Sassari, Alghero, Olbia, and the inland is quite scarcely populated.
There is little negative environmental impact, the seas are clean and clear, fishing is good: rock lobster, scampi, bottarga. Other suggestions: suckling pigs, wild boar, dry bread. and lovely cheep cheese. Don’t forget to wash it down with the splendid white wines
