Koh Samui is
considered to be the second most popular island destination in Thailand and
has a lot to offer to tourists. It is an island exhibiting a rare beauty
and uniqueness and it is home to 40,000 inhabitants. About 90 percent of
this population is comprised of Buddhists.
Koh Samui is also the third largest island of the
country. It is the largest island in an archipelago consisting of around
eighty uninhabited islands which form the popular Ang Thong National Marine
Park, a wonderful paradise where tourists can enjoy kayaking and snorkeling.
Before the 1990s, this place was a remote, secluded, separated island where
people had none or little connection to those on the mainland, until tourists
began to have an interest in the area and began exploring and visiting
the island. Since then, the island has grown and developed largely.
Samui is well-known for its natural wonder and beauty, particularly
for its white sand beaches, the stunning corals, beautiful waterfalls,
clear water and abundant coconut trees.
To get around the island, you can rent a motorbike (a lot of locals rent
them out), or hire a taxi driver to get you to your destination. Motorbikes
are usually rented out for about 120-700 baht per day, depending on the
season and the size of the bike. If you want a cheaper alternative, you
may also rent out bicycles for no more than 200 baht per day. The roads
in Samui are mostly concrete and are well-developed so you won’t have much of a problem travelling.
Visiting this island in Thailand is
usually associated with a beach vacation. In other words, people come here
mainly for its beaches. The main beaches
are Chaweng and Lamai. These beaches used to be perfectly natural; however,
these days it’s
not the same because of all the developments happening on the island which
are impacting the natural wonders of these beaches. Chaweng Beach, for
example, used to only have bungalows for accommodations but today, there
are already lots of resorts and shops on it.
Despite this, the said beaches are still very beautiful and mesmerizing
and are still worth visiting. If you are looking to have a lot of fun and
bar hopping in your vacation, you can find them right on these beaches.
If you want a more quiet vacation experience, don’t worry because
there are other beaches to go to which are not so crowded and commercialized.
The beautiful Mae Nam Beach, for example, is a perfect place for quiet
There are just so many things to do and places to visit
on this island. One of the spots we can recommend is the Wat Khunaram Ko
Samui. It is the most popular temple in Koh
of the mummified monk, accessible to everybody. The mummy is placed in
a casket and just this experience takes you back in history.
The Grandmother and Grandfather rocks are another must-see on the island.
These rocks found on Lamai Beach look quite odd. They actually look like
the male and female sexual organs and are one of the island’s most popular tourists
spots. The locals of course have legends of how these were formed and you can
always ask if you are curious.
Because of the abundance of beautiful beaches on the island, the
island has become a favorite destination for divers. So if you are looking
for a diving and snorkeling adventure, this island is a perfect place to
