Puerto Morelos Travel Guide
Puerto Morelos, a tranquil fishing town on the eastern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, offers a friendly alternative to the big-city atmosphere of Cancun or the congestion of Playa del Carmen. This resort is in close proximity to the international airport, only 20 minutes away.
The tranquil white-sand beaches of Puerto Morelos are protected by the world's second largest barrier reef, which provides a safe swimming and water sport environment not found in Cancun, where strong currents frequently put swimmers at risk.
Enjoy a delicious feast or light meal at one of the many family restaurants surrounding the town square. Menus range from locally caught fresh fish and seafood such as lobster, conch and octopus, to Italian cuisine featuring pasta and pizza, or superb Mexican dishes.
This town offers all the typical amenities such as a pharmacy, general store, liquor store, money exchange facilities, travel agencies, a gas station, rental car shop, book store, scuba shops, and gift stores.
This region is centrally located between Cancun (30 miles south) and Playa del Carmen, making excursions to these fun spots or to the vast number of Mayan ruins in the region relatively easy. The new four-lane divided highway makes travel along the coast safe and convenient.
Located just a few meters offshore, the barrier reef is easily accessible by local dive operators who run tours, providing superb scuba diving. Sport fishing is also popular here, with annual fishing tournaments attracting multinational participation.
