Qaitbey Fort is said to sit on the site of Ptolemy II's legendary lighthouse, built in 238 BC. The lighthouse fell in a 14th century earthquake, making way for this grey-stone fort, which was built using what remained of the lighthouse. The views over Alexandria from the fort are impressive.

The Abu al-Abbas al-Mursi Mosque, built in 1775 by Algerians is a beautiful building of huge granite pillars, colored glass, intricately carved wooden windows and paved marble floors.

The Graeco-Roman Museum is packed full of fascinating objects reflecting Egypt during the Hellenistic and Roman periods. You'll need at least a few hours here to view all the mosaics, pottery, sarcophagi and lovely garden filled with statues.

Fascinating 2nd century AD funeral sculptures and friezes can be seen here in the eerie Kom el Shokafa Catacombs: the largest known Roman burial grounds in Egypt. Visitors can walk around the tombs unsupervised.

Relaxing at beaches and waterfront attractions along the coast is the perfect way to end a long day sightseeing. Beaches stretch in either direction from downtown and visitors can explore the coast at their leisure. One of the best places to watch the sun set over the Mediterranean Sea is the Corniche, a seaside promenade that stretches the length of the city.
