Bracciano (populaton 16,000) is a small, quiet town in the central region of Lazio, Italy, 30 km northwest of Rome. Although off the usual tourist trail, it has a picturesque setting above a lake and an impressive castle, Castello Orsini-Odescalchi, one of the most noteworthy examples of Renaissance military architecture in Italy which is open to the public. Lago di Bracciano (Lake Bracciano) or "Sabatino", the eighth largest lake in Italy is widely used for sailing and is popular with tourists.
There is only one real tourist attraction in Bracciano: the Castello Odescalchi, however, the medieval lanes are romantic and evocative and worth exploring. Climbing the lane to the right of the castle walls visitors will find themselves in a place that time seems to have forgotten, a warren of winding, sloping medieval lanes and alleys.
It is a journey in the past, a feast for taste and most of all the pleasure of participating, of being among the people who jostle through the narrow streets, dance, drink, meet friends, take photos, and enjoy a simpler life.
The beauty of nature and landscape, the historical and cultural heritage with its archaeological and artistic richness: these are the ingredients having made Lake Bracciano and area a desired holiday destination.
The history of Bracciano is all about the magnificent Castle whose sizes dominates the horizon and town. Due to its structural and architectural characteristics and condition, it is considered one of the most important castles in Italy. It was built by Napoleone Orsini. Among its most famous guests have been the king of France Charles VIII, Pope Sixtus IV, Marcantonio Colonna and in more recent times John John Kennedy, Tina Turner and lately Tom Cruise who celebrated his wedding with Katie Holmes in the castle in November 2006.
