Bulgarian cuisine is a representative of the cuisine of south-eastern Europe with some Turkish and Greek influences, but it has some unique elements. Popular local dishes includes the most popular Bulgarian salad, the shopska salad, which is a mix of tomatoes, cucumbers, onion, raw or roasted peppers. Traditionally it is dressed only with salt, sunflower or olive oil and vinaigrette. Another popular salad is the snow white salad, the shepherd salad and the lyutenitsa.

A spiritual centre of the Bulgarian people, it is located in the northwest part of the Rila Mountain, about 20 km from the town of Rila and about 120 km from Sofia.
