Cayo Vacation Rentals
Book your next vacation rental in Cayo – the largest district in Belize. Situated on the West side of the country, the district borders Guatemala. The district capital is San Ignacio. The region is predominantly agricultural with extremely fertile land, growing citrus fruits and bananas as the main crops. The region has a population of just under 54,000 residents.
The district of Cayo is just an hour drive from Belize City, making it great for day-trips if you have found good accommodations in the city. However, vacation rentals and condo rentals can be found here as well, so it might be worthwhile to spend a few days to explore the region. Cayo has a varied landscape, including rolling hills, farmland expanses, river valleys and mountain ridges.
Eco-tourism in the region is growing quickly as one of the districts most important industries. Some of the top sites to see in Cayo District include many Pre-Columbian Maya ruins, such as Xunantunich, Cahal Pech, Caracol, and Chaa Creek. Alternatively, there are many nature reserves, including Blue Hole and Guanacaste National Park – these are well worth the visit. There are also a couple major rivers to explore, including the Macal River and Mopan River.
The district capital town of San Ignacio has much of the commerce and tourism in the region. Much of the population lives here or in the nearby town of Santa Elena. The two towns are located at slightly higher elevations and are therefore somewhat cooler and less humid than the rest of the region. If you’re lucky, your accommodations and lodgings in the area will give you great views down to the surrounding lowlands.
