Cefalù itself is a town rich in Roman, Greek and Arab history. The historical heritage is reflected in architecture, location and its atmosphere
. The town is divided into two parts; a newer, modern part with supermarkets, gas stations and car rentals, and an old part that is reserved mainly for pedestrians. A labyrinth of narrow, winding, medieval streets, hosting small squares with boutique shops and cafes,
leads you through the old town center that is dominated by the majestic twin towers of a 12th century Norman cathedral - or Duomo.
A climb up Cefalù's mountain, La Rocca, boasts the ruins of a large fortress and an ancient Sicanian-Greek temple. Near the ruins of the fortress at the top of the mountain are the remnants of a smaller structure, The Temple of Diana. The foundation of this simple enclosure is said to be one of the oldest structures still standing in Sicily.
The summit of La Rocca, with its magnificent view of the town, cathedral, mountains and sea, is well worth the climb. Viewed at night from the shore to the west, the illuminated mountain and cathedral make for an inspiring site, evoking much of the city's medieval grandeur.
There are many delightful restaurants in the town center and near the sun-drenched shore which offer seafood, local specialties and also include a number of pizzerias.
