Here our neighbours still bake bread in the traditional domed bread oven and farm almonds like generations before them. Guests have the use of a BBQ, large sun terrace, beautiful garden and Swim/Spar pool, with great views of the surrounding mountains. After dark stargazers will be delighted with the clarity of the night sky. NOTE: Summer time in rural Spain can lead to water shortages which means the mains water is frequently turned off, we have the unique facility of back-up water tanks so our quests are not inconvenienced. We have the well known Circuito DE Almeria a short 15 minute ride away, where all the major UK trackday organisers and Spanish companies run events through out the year. Enjoy glorious scenery in beautiful warm sunshine throughout the winter months as you discover the peace and tranquillity. There are many largely undiscovered walks in the area. Discover too the smells of lavender & thyme as you walk amongst the mountain herbs & flowers, particularly Jan - May. The house is actually situated on a long marked circular walk. Note: Most walks are un signposted so a good compass and map reading skills are useful. However if required we can arrange guided walks for groups. The area surrounding is fabulous cycling country for the enthusiast ! There are miles of quiet roads crossing open countryside with gorgeous views of the heath land, mountains, almond, olive, orange and lemon groves. Its often hard going so strictly for the fit and adventurous. The mountain biker too has many hill and mountain tracks to choose from. The Enormous Sorbas cave system is nearby. There are guided tours of the caves from easy going for beginners to more advanced for those with experience. Equipment can be provided by the centre. Granada and The Alhambra Palace is a must to visit at only 2 hours distance by motorway. For film enthusiasts there is Mini Hollywood Film Studio, Oasis Reserva Zoologica, Fort Bravo Cinema Studios and Western Lodge.     The house draws its particular charm from the uniqueness of its architectural surroundings. It is located inside an ancient baglio, a typical Sicilian rural courtyard enclosed with a large door, at the centre of which lies a mulberry tree. On two levels and covering 100 square meters, the house opens onto a large living room with two couches, a comfortable dining table and a beautiful kitchen that although open on one side, has an autonomous space, comfortable and organized. There are two bedrooms, both spacious and bright and both overlooking a magnificent olive grove. The largest has a double bed (160 x 200), the second two single beds that you can put side by side if you want. In both there is space for a cot. A stone staircase leads from the living room to the large loft, where you find another living area usable as a third bedroom for 2/3 people. Here there is a sofa bed (140x 200) and space for an extra bed. This area leads to a lovely terrace (15 sq m) on the roof of the baglio where you can have breakfast with the morning sun, sunbathe in privacy or enjoy the cool of the evening. The house has two large and elegant bathrooms, both with a shower, one on the ground floor and one in the loft area. The entrance of the house overlooks the courtyard of the baglio and in the space reserved in front of it you can relax on a sun lounger or dine by candlelight. The house is the result of a recent restoration using recycled materials such as ancient stones and railings, and the choice of handmade terracotta for the floors and chestnut beams for the ceilings, give the house a particular charm. The apartment was exactly as advertised, and the pool table and Wii sports provided us and our two boys great family recreation time in between all the cultural and culinary sightseeing of Madrid. Most importantly, our host was an extraordinarily helpful "concierge", offering spot-on advice on places to eat and see, and even helping us to get a taxi to take us to the train station on our last day, when a transit strike was otherwise threatening to make it hard to get where we needed to. I honestly cannot speak highly enough about our host's unfailing good humor and great advice. The location of the apartment is a bit out of the way--a half-hour or so by subway from most of the places we wanted to visit in Madrid--but even that became a surprising benefit, as it forced us to get to know the subway system, and thus to really feel like locals. The house is located on the edge of Artemonas, a traditional and un-spoiled village that since the 1950's has been protected from further change by the Greek government. While it's secluded and quiet, ensuring great privacy to the visitor, it also gives the opportunity to reach the 'tavernas' and 'kafeneia' (coffee shops) of the picturesque Artemonas, in less than a five-minute walk. In another ten minutes on foot or less than 1km by car is the center of the island, Apollonia, with bars, restaurants and small shops selling arts and crafts. The beaches of the island, such as Platis Yialos, Chrisopigi, Vathi and Faros, famous for their clear blue waters can also be reached in less than fifteen minutes by car or bus. The house was built in Sifnos during the middle of the 19th century. The members of the family owned the Pan Hellenic Shipping Company (Panhellenique Navigation a Vapeur, Athens) that connected many of Europe's famous trading ports and often, their ships went from Tergeste to Odessos. In order to build one of the first and unique houses found on the island, the family used the skills of both local and foreign workmen while the building materials that where needed for the house were transported on the ships that belonged to the family.
