Gran Canaria is the second most populous island of the Canary Islands
, a Spanish archipelago. It is located in the Atlantic Ocean about 150 km off the northwestern coast of Africa
and about 1350 km from Europe
. This island is called a "Miniature Continent" due to the different climates and variety of landscapes
found, with long beaches and dunes of white sand, contrasting with green ravines and picturesque villages. A third of the island is under protection by UNESCO
. Many accommodations, apartment rental, and villa rental and vacation rental options are located around many of the UNESCO sites.
Most tourists stay in the south of the island, which is sunnier and has less rain
than the north. In the south there is a large bird park, Palmitos Park, as well as many beach resort communities with an abundance of luxury villas and various lodging options. Resorts are concentrated in the central eastern part of the southern coast in the Maspalomas area, which includes the towns of San Agustín, Playa del Inglés, Sonnenland, Maspalomas and Meloneras. Visitors to Gran Canaria will be delighted to find traditional accommodations, vacation rental, villa rental and apartment rental choices here to suit all budgets.
The Dunes of Maspalomas
are located between Playa del Inglés ("The Englishman's Beach") and Maspalomas. Another tourist attraction is the lighthouse at Maspalomas situated at the western end of Maspalomas. In Tarajalillo, an Aeroclub exists from where tourist flights can be taken over the island. Still further to the west along the southern shore, in the Municipality of Mogán, are the communities of Puerto Rico
and Puerto de Mogán, a village referred to as "Little Venice"
on account of its many canals.
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is a bustling port town called home by an eclectic mix of people
. If the bustle gets too much, head to The North where Arucas offers a laidback atmosphere and a few sights that make wandering worth the while. Also nearby is Teror, with its farmers' markets
and picturesque vacation rentals, villa rentals, condo rentals and apartment rentals.
For active travellers Gran Canaria can keep the adrenalin pumping, with scope for hiking, horse trekking and water sports
. Culture enthusiasts can be similarly satisfied by the museums, churches and historic towns, as well as by getting under the skin of the colorful, cosmopolitan capital of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
Gran Canaria has something to offer all visitors, no matter what age. In addition to numerous sites and activities, the island gives its visitors an abundance of vacation rentals, villa rentals, condo rentals and apartment rentals filled with flair and Spanish charm.
The region offers a whole range of tourism attractions and a range of accommodation options from apartment rentals and vacation rentals to suit all budgets and tastes.
