Greve in Chianti
is a town in the province of Florence
. It is located 31 km south of Florence and 42 km north of Siena
. Situated in the Val di Greve, it is named for the small, fast-flowing river that runs through it, and is the principal town in the Chianti wine district which stretches south of Florence to just north of Siena
Chianti provides opportunities for a unique style of vacation
where you can find relaxing accommodations and lodging in one of the many beautifully restored farmhouses of the area and yet still be within easy reach of the art cities such as Florence, Siena, Lucca
. The vacation rentals, villa rentals, condo rentals and apartment rentals of Chianti offered as holiday rentals in the hills around Greve in Chianti are characterized by terracotta tiled floors and beamed ceilings, and are usually furnished in country style with authentic antiques or very good copies.
It developed predominantly as a market town, with a large market being held in the unusual triangular piazza
lined with porticoes, which is still always busy and lively. Various accommodation, vacation rental, condo rental, apartment rental and villa rental options can be found in and around this lively piazza.
Some of the historic sites
here include the Franciscan monastery which is at the heart of the old part of the city and The Museo di Arte Sacra housed in the former convent of San Francesco; it houses an important collection of paintings, sculptures, vestments and liturgical furnishings, a tangible sign of the artistic vitality of the local district.
Being slightly off the beaten track the beautiful accommodations, vacation rentals, apartment rentals and villa rentals are usually available year round. The Chianti Classico annual wine festival in September
does attract many visitors and during this busy time accommodation, vacation rental, villa rental and apartment rentals are booked in advance. Local merchants display their products, and wine tasting is offered. Olive oil
is also available for tasting, served on fresh sliced Italian bread. Local cheeses are also available.
Greve is surrounded by delightful villages
, such as Montefioralle with its stone houses and paved streets and beautiful villas, or Panzano not far from which is the fine Romanesque church of San Leolino, with a five-arch sixteenth-century portico. The interior houses precious works of art. There are also many castles in the surroundings of Greve; originally defensive bastions they are now elegant residences or famous estates; Uzzano, Verrazzano, Vicchiomaggio, Vignamaggio (where Leonardo's famous Mona Lisa was born), and Lamole, to name but a few.
