, United States. Black sandy beaches and a quieter location make this the perfect Hawai’in getaway.
Beginning in 1983, eruption from the Kilauea volcano
began to affect the area, completely covering it. Kaimū was located on Kaimū Bay. The bay was noteworthy for its spectacularly beautiful black sand beach which was surrounded by shady palm trees. Now both the bay and the town are buried under some 50 feet of lava.
Located thirty minutes from Hilo at the end of Hwy 137 where the black lava fields from the most current Kilauea eruption stretch to the shore and to Kaimu Black Sand Beach.
The contrasts of the white ocean foam, blue-green waters, and black sand beach, are spectacular. All along the shore, there are new coconut trees planted by locals and visitors, after the town of Kaimu was completely buried by a volcano in 1990. There is now new life growing among the lava rock. The road is on top of the cooled lava now, with some homes built on top of the lava. There is also the New Beach, black sand like the old, where locals and caring visitors are helping to restore what was lost for future generations by bringing sprouted coconuts and planting them.Holiday lodgings
can be rented directly from owners of villas, bed and breakfast, cabin, home, and condo accommodations
