Nestled in the mountains of Western Honshu, on Honshu Island, Kyoto is the former imperial capital of Japan and was the emperor’s residence from 794 until 1868. The city has survived since the sixth century with many historic buildings intact including the old imperial palace. It is now the country's seventh largest city with a population of 1.4 million people. With 17 Unesco World Heritage sites, more than 1600 Buddhist temples and over 400 Shintō shrines, Kyoto is also one of the world’s most culturally rich cities. Choose holiday accommodations with Owner Direct Vacation Rentals, where we can connect you with condo rentals, villa rentals, and apartment rentals listed by owners of vacation accommodations.

Over the centuries, Kyoto was destroyed by many wars and fires, but due to its historic value, the city was dropped from the list of target cities for the atomic bomb and spared from air raids during the Second World War. Countless temples, shrines and other historically priceless structures survive in the city today.

The best way to get around Kyoto is by public transportation which includes trains, subways and buses. Most attractions are in places that were built well before the existence of automobiles, and the availability of parking varies between extremely limited and non-existent. Furthermore, what little parking is available is often outrageously expensive. Search for a last minute accommodation deal in Kyoto in a house rental, villa rental, condo rental or vacation rental.

The city center is an ideal location for tourists that have limited time to spend in Kyoto. The highlights of the central area are Nijō-jō, a lavishly decorated seventeenth-century palace, and nearby Nijō-jin'ya, a fascinating place riddled with secret passages and hideaways. Other areas are easily accessed from the city center thanks to the efficient and convenient public transit system. The most popular sightseeing area of Kyoto is the Western district and features the Golden Pavilion and Arashiyama, but attention should be paid to the Eastern district as well. Take a walk north from Kiyomizu-dera to Ginkaku-ji and pass intriguing temples, gardens and museums. Lodging is available in Kyoto; Owner Direct Vacation Rentals can help you find the right accommodation, vacation rental or apartment rental for your holiday.

The mountains of North Kyoto are easily accessible from the city center. There are numerous shrines and temples including one of the oldest shrines in all of Japan. The area is also known as the “Back Parlor” and is known for its mysterious aura that saturates its shrines and temples. In the summertime, visitors to this area will benefit from the mountain’s cooler and refreshing temperatures.

Discover the hundreds, perhaps thousands of pockets of incredible beauty that are scattered all across this ancient city. If you own holiday rentals in Kyoto, list your vacation accommodations, vacation rentals, villas, holiday homes, villa rentals and vacation home rentals with Owner Direct.
