Mad River Glen is a ski area in Fayston, Vermont. Its terrain has been ranked as the most challenging on the east coast of the United States.
Located within the Green Mountain range, it sits in the Mad River Valley, close to the larger Sugarbush
Resort. The resort offers fabulous mountain side accommodations and lodging ranging from spacious vacation rentals to cozy and intimate condo rentals and chalet rentals.
It averages over 250 inches (640 cm) of snow a year
and maintains a traditional form of New England skiing that emphasizes snow preservation on narrow trails instead of man-made snow on wide boulevards. Mad River Glen also does very little grooming and prefers to leave its trails with whatever naturally forms. It has one of only two single chairlifts left in the country and does not allow snowboarding. It is one of a very limited number of ski cooperatives.
From fully equipped accommodation, chalet rental, condo rental and vacation rental options to great home-style food, visitors will experience the famous Mad River hospitality
which is one of the hallmarks of the Mad River Glen ski experience.
Advanced skiers will find no lack of challenges.
Not all of it is marked, but if you're unfamiliar with the area you certainly won't be disappointed sticking with named trails and glades. No matter what marked route you take down the mountain, it will lead back to the compact base area, which is shoehorned into a narrow area just a few steps away from the parking lot. You'll find all skier services and three of the area's four lifts handily placed.
Down below in the Mad River Valley the towns of Waitsfield and Warren offer an excellent selection of restaurants, pubs, shops, country stores, and markets.
There are also an array of accommodations, vacation rentals and chalet rentals too. Since both are real towns, you'll also find a full range of services ranging from banks to auto repair to health care.
No matter where you decided to stay, mountain side or in of the surrounding towns, there is a wealth of accommodation, vacation rental and chalet rental choices can be found along the lower portion of Route 17 and of course down in the Mad River Valley.
