Newport Accommodations

Newport is a small picturesque little seaside town in the Barony of Burrishoole, County Mayo, Ireland; with a population of 590 in 2006. It is located on the west coast of Ireland, along the shore of Clew Bay, north of Westport and twenty-five minutes away from Castlebar. The town is on the banks of the Brown Oak River and has become a popular angling and tourist centre.

Top outdoor attractions of the county include angling, walking, hill walking, beaches, surfing, boating, horseback riding and every type of organized sport. Newport and the surrounding areas have a variety of fishing rivers and lakes. Beltra and Furnace Lakes are within easy reach for salmon and trout fishing. Deep sea angling can be enjoyed at Clew Bay, world renowned for the many species of fish caught there.

The county also has a number of first-rate museums, over 3,000 historical and archeological sites, great restaurants, arts and crafts and great shopping. Perhaps their greatest asset is the amazing scenery to be found across the county. There are some truly breathtaking walks and drives. You’ll find that Newport and County Mayo are well served by road, rail and air. Once you arrive in Newport, there are regular ferry services to many of Mayo's islands.

A beautiful feature of the town is its seven arch viaduct, built in 1892 to carry the Westport to Achill railway line. The arch has now been restored, and looks especially impressive at night, when floodlit. Newport is also the site of a number of very beautiful buildings. One of these is the very striking St Patrick's Catholic Church, built in 1914 by Rudolph M. Butler in the Irish Romanesque Style and is so imposing that it is usually referred to as ‘Newport Cathedral’. The doorway at the entrance is modelled on the one in Clonfert Cathedral in Galway. It has a magnificent stained glass east window of The Last Judgement, the last window completed by Harry Clarke in 1930. Newport stands at the entrance to the Bangor Trail, a 26 mile walking route.

The new Newport to Mulranny Greenway offers some of the most idyllic scenery in the west of Ireland. Stretching 17.5km, this dedicated walking & cycling track follows the route of the old Westport to Achill railway line, which closed in 1937. Walkers or cyclists can enjoy spectacular views of Clew Bay and its islands along this breath-taking route.

Hotel accommodation covers the full range of facilities likely to be required by anyone. In Ireland stately villa rentals, luxurious castles with apartment rentals, intimate old world inns and modern vacation rentals are all readily available. Most accommodations welcome children, some even providing playgrounds, playroom, special menus and entertainment.

Every summer there is the much acclaimed Newport Grainne Uaile Festival. Events include: Live street music, pub crawl, 60's Disco, Irish traditional night, crafts display, BBQ on the street, raft race and fancy dress ball in the Community Hall.

Black Oak River runs right through Newport. On her shores you will find bars and lounges, where visitors can relax in the evening after a day's sightseeing, walking, fishing or golfing. There are also numerous vacation rentals, villa rentals, apartment rentals and boutique lodging options, all with a terrific view of the river, Atlantic Ocean or city.

For the golfer, Westport championship 18 hole course is only 7 miles away and Mulranny 9-hole golf links is 10 miles from Newport along the scenic drive to Achill.

This area has lots to offer for a biker or a hiker, or an artist or author. Come along with your friends and explore a variety or pursuits - golf, fishing, shooting, bird watching, mountain climbing; it is an ideal location for hill walking, being adjacent to the popular Burrishoole / Lettermoghera Loop Walks - featured in Ireland Walks magazine.
