Description. Alert Bay Lodge is a west coast retreat lying off the pristine north-east coast of Vancouver Island, B.C. Located on the south shore of Cormorant Island, the lodge overlooks Johnstone Strait. This narrow, glacier-carved waterway is home to a population of about 200 orcas, the largest pod in the world. Cedar log in construction, the Lodge was originally a church. This legacy is reflected in the 14’ arched cedar beams that frame the expansive Great Room and the former pulpit which now serves as the dining room. Guests can peruse the library, relax by the woodstove and exchange stories with others. Wireless internet is available without charge. The kitchen includes an industrial fridge, stove, freezer, cold room, microwave, Bunn coffee maker and two sinks. The fridge and stove were purchased in 2022. Year-round attractions unique to Alert Bay are the U'Mista Cultural Centre. Known for its potlatch collection, the Centre is a 20-minute walk away along the ocean road and is open Tuesday to Saturday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. About one kilometer inland lie the Ecological Gardens and Big Tree Trail - haunting and beautiful at any time year. Room configuration is as follows: Room 1 and Room 2: one queen bed, soaker tub/ shower, mini-fridge, and desk. Room 3: one double bed, shower, mini-fridge. Room 4: two queen beds, shower, mini-fridge, chest of drawers. The lodge is heated by a closed loop oil-fired burner that brings heat to baseboards in all rooms (except the kitchen). All rooms are thermostatically controlled. This system was installed in 2022. Rental. The lodge is available for rental from November 1, 2022 to April 30, 2023. We include electricity and one cord of firewood. Additional firewood may be purchased in the Port McNeill area for $300 for a half-cord, delivered to the lodge. We require that oil used during the stay be replaced. Power outages occasionally occur on Cormorant Island. Flashlights are available and a Coleman two burner stove and propane tubes are available. We do not discount rent for power outages. As well, a condition of the rent is that the Lodge is a designated refuge centre for elders as it is one of very few buildings with a large room and a wood stove. If need be, the owners will compensate the renters for any out-of-pocket expenses arising from elders’ temporary stay during the day. A condition of the rent is to allow the owners one site visit per month. Any damage or concerns must be immediately reported to the owners.
