Located in the highly desirable, ever-sunny Kapoho, Hale Pilialoha, the Friendship House has been lovingly remodeled into two very private units. Enter through the beautiful, custom, double glass doors into the light-filled entry and into your warm and welcoming vacation home. This incredible hale has gorgeous cedar walls and is decorated with tropical furnishings in a beautiful Hawaiiana theme. The huge upstairs master bedroom suite, with queen bed, has its own newly finished master bathroom with a large walk-in shower, and a private lanai with ocean views. Keep those lanai doors open and let the ocean sounds lull you to sleep. Downstairs, there are two more bedrooms. You’ll have a queen in the 2nd bedroom, two twins in the third bedroom. The two downstairs bedrooms share a full bath. The main hale will sleep up to six and if you need additional sleeping for two-four more, or you would just like to have your own private space from the rest of the crowd, then you can rent the entire hale which includes the downstairs Pilialoha Studio. The Studio has its own first floor private entrance and is as cute as a button with its own private full-size kitchen, bath, and eating area. The Studio can be rented either with the main house or separately.
The hale is just a five minute walk from the protected Wai Opae tide pools where swimming and snorkeling can be a daily occurrence. Just a five minute drive down the famous Red Road is the Ahalanui Warm Spring Park which is a geothermally heated swimming pond at the edge of the Pacific Ocean. Since Kapoho is located at the furthest most eastern edge of the Big Island, it enjoys drier weather and those comfortable ocean trade winds.
And, don’t miss old Pahoa town, just a short 4 mile drive from the hale where you will find the original boardwalks that date back to the late 1800’s when this sleepy little town was king in the sugar plantation days. There is great dining in this little town with Italian, Thai, Chinese and Tex-Mex. Hilo town with all of its historical points of interest, color and famous for its friendly people is only about 45 minutes away and the ever changing Volcanoes National Park is about a 60 minute drive.
What to Pack: The Island of Hawaii, aka the Big Island, boasts over 4,000 square miles and 10 different climate zones, within which are many micro climate zones. You may think that packing your favorite swimsuit and slippers (flip flops) is enough, but not true if you plan on doing any hiking or sightseeing around the island. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park can get quite chilly with temperatures dropping down to the low 40's at night, sometimes lower, so do bring your favorite warm pajamas and at least a light jacket. It actually snows often on Mauna Kea, but they close those roads whenever there are blizzard conditions present. If you plan on doing a lava hike, you should consider bringing your hiking boots, as you’ll want good ankle support for this 1/2-day or more experience. At the very least, bring a solid pair of tennis shoes and don’t attempt the lava hike in flip flops.
