Belle-Island is the largest of the Brittany islands, and is found off the Morbihan coast opposite Quiberon. The island of Houat is also nearby. The island is reached by ferry from Quiberon which is a 45 minute boat trip away.
Surrounded by cliffs and beaches, the island is approximately 17km by 9 km. Belle-Ile is a pretty island with a nice mix of scenery, beaches and ports. Sauzon is one of the two main ports on the island, the other being Le Palais, both are on the north-east coast, slightly more protected from the ravages of the Atlantic Ocean than the south-west side, which is known as the Cote Sauvage ('wild coast').
The island is very attractive and full of contrasts, a scenic place with some splendid coastal views interspersed with pretty little villas, towns and villages, beaches and coves, wilderness and spring green meadows. The scenery on the west side of the island is more dramatic, but safe swimming is harder to find. The island's climate is oceanic, having less rain and milder winters than on the mainland.
During the 1870s and 1880s, French Impressionist painter Claude Monet painted the rock formations at Belle-Île. Monet’s series of paintings of the rocks at Belle-Île astounded the Paris art world when he first exhibited them in 1887. Most notable are the "Storm, Coast at Belle-Ile" and "Cliffs at Belle-Ile" both rendered in 1886. The first time Auguste Rodin saw the ocean off the Brittany coast he exclaimed, “It’s a Monet."
Sauzon is a perfect vacation spot with lodging and vacation rentals such as condo rentals apartment rentals, villa rentals and family style accommodations.
