Siracusa – also called Syracusa – was renowned as one of the most beautiful cities of the ancient world. It is the birthplace of Archimedes. Isola di Ortygia, the Island of Ortigia, is linked to the mainland by three bridges. Picturesque vacation rentals - a condo rental, apartments or Italian villa rentals - offer you gracious historic holiday homes with modern conveniences, a welcomed alternative to a hotel stay.

The Ponte Umbertino bridge will lead you to the majestic ruins of the Greek Temple of Apollo. Piazza Archimede is a good place to start exploring the island. Wander down narrow medieval lanes past Baroque palaces and churches. Lined with impressive buildings, an outdoor café at the Piazza Duomo is a welcomed place to stop for refreshment. On a Sunday evening, take part in the traditional leisurely stroll known as the Passeggiata. Return to your cottage vacation rental accommodation and enjoy a fine Italian wine on the terrace. Villa rentals often have a swimming pool, perfect for a swim in the late afternoon.

The architecture of the Duomo is a composite of its history. The massive Doric columns of the Temple of Athena are still visible. Norman influence is evident in the wall above the columns along Via Minerva. Today, it houses a shrine to Santa Lucia. The statute of this patron saint of Siracusa is carried through town in a colourful procession twice a year. A subterranean attraction is a set of underground tunnels used as a refuge from bombing during the Second World War.

Beneath the hotel Alla Giudecca is the underground ancient Jewish ritual bath, or Miqweh, which was rediscovered at the end of the 20th Century. Ortigia’s vibrant and colourful marketplace is where you can purchase local produce and the bounty of the sea: swordfish, prawns, fresh lemons and oranges, spices, cheeses, almonds and pistachios, along with the Sicilian specialty, snails. Ingredients that would delight a chef can be part of the meal that you prepare in the kitchen of your villa rental accommodations. Vacation rentals have everything you need, from linens to laundry facilities.

The regional art centre, Galleria Regionale di Palazzo Bellomo, covers history from the time of the Byzantine era up to the 18th Century. Water laps at the feet of the 13th Century Castello Maniace. Syracuse’s Archaeological Park - Parco Archeologico della Neapolis - bears witness to the ancient Greeks. Hear sound amplified in the amazing 60 meters (197 feet) “ear of Dionysus”. See a Roman amphitheatre from the time of Augustus, as well as the latomie, old quarries. It has the largest Greek theatre - Teatro Greco on Temenite Hill - in the world. Be part of the audience as classical plays are enacted by the Italian Institute of Ancient Drama, Instituto Nazionale del Dramma Antico.

Owner Direct Vacation Rentals shows you Italian holiday homes on their easy-to-navigate website. Italian villas are a picture-book setting for your accommodations, suitable for a family or a group of friends. Apartments in historical towns, condo rentals close to the sea, or a restored villa rental are but some of the options for vacation rental accommodation.
