The thousand Island region is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts of all persuasions. A truly international tourist destination, the area encompasses both sides of the Canadian and US
border. Named for the region’s more than 1000 islands, 1864 to be exact, it is a mecca for outdoor adventures. With an abundance of both public and private accommodations whether it is condo rentals, vacation rentals, hotels or a simple B&B lodging, the area is tailor made for those who love the great outdoors. The region extends from Kingston
on the Canadian
side and from Oswego to Messena on the US side, and reaches inland to the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains
. It is an area of endless water and shorelines, rich in history, and cultural heritage. The four New York
counties that make up the region, Oswego, Jefferson, Lewis
and St. Lawrence
offer everything needed for a great vacation. Visitors have been coming to the 1000 Island region for over one hundred and fifty years. Many Islands offer the opportunity to find vacation rentals, a condo rental, or even a rustic cabin so accommodation is never a problem, whether you are a weekender or a family on vacation. The area is filled with lighthouses, historic castles, unparallel fishing and diving, on the water dining, cruises, tours and much more. It is a destination that will call you back time and time again.
There are a number of historic sites to visit as well. Boldt Castle
, a one hundred and twenty room mansion and extensive grounds available for touring and can be visited by boat or tour cruise. Singer Castle
on Dark Island
is open to visitors; Frederick Bourne had Singer Castle built with secret passageways so he could spy on his guests. The Antique Boat Museum
in Clayton exhibits antique wooden boats built and used in the region. Your accommodations may not come with 120 rooms or your vacation rental with secret passages, but there are plenty of other things to keep you entertained.
For the outdoors enthusiast, hiking, boating, kayaking and fishing are a few of the many activities that beckon. A more leisurely past-time is cruising
along the waterway just sightseeing and relaxing. If you really want to relax, take one of the many cruises available and sit and watch some of the most beautiful scenery in the world
as it quietly slides by while you listen to some of the astonishing tales behind the islands. After a day on the water head back to your vacation rental and head out to one of the many restaurants throughout the region, where you can get anything from a simple juicy burger to world class dining. Or spend some time in the great boutiques and souvenir shops that showcase local artists and craftsmen.
The thousand Island experience is not to be missed, with neither accommodation or adventure in short supply it is a once in a lifetime experience that should be repeated over and over again.
