Townsend is a city in eastern Blount County located in Tennessee
, United States. It is one of the three gateways to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Aptly called “The Peaceful Side of the Smokies”, it has the least traffic of the three main entrances to the national park. The park's other two entrances are found south of Gatlinburg
, Tennessee, and north of Cherokee, North Carolina
Multiple commercial attractions are accessible through these two entrances. Townsend, on the other hand, is low-key with its inexpensive restaurants and outdoor sports and the world-renowned horse show attracting visitors who wish to experience summer and fall in the Smokies at a reasonable price. The Townsend fall foliage is spectacular!
A few must-visit spots in Townsend are the Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center which houses the region's history; the Little River Railroad and Lumber Company Museum if you wish to see the logging history in the area; the National Park Service Collections Preservation Center; and the nearby Tuckaleechee Caverns, a mile-long cave system that reaches depths of up to 150 feet. Explore all these while you stay in a private vacation rental.
There are two peak seasons in the Smokies, mid-summer (June 15-August 15) and the entire month of October. The leaves start changing colors during mid to late October.
