Wailua is one of the communities that make up the east side of Kauai. Wailuā (literally, "two waters" in Hawaiian) is located between Kapaa and Lihue on Kauai. It is situated just 8 miles away from the Lihue Airport and Nawiliwili Harbor, where most residents and visitors find transportation on and off the island.

Wailua Falls is an 80-foot waterfall that feeds into the Wailua River. There is a path to the bottom of the falls, but it is muddy, slippery and dangerous. In ancient times, Hawaiian men would jump from the top of the falls to prove their manhood. There is another waterfall nearby named ‘Opaeka’a Falls. These Falls were featured on the opening credits of the television show Fantasy Island.
The community primarily raises taro - the large leafy plant grown in watery fields and used to make poi. Poi is a traditional Hawaiian dish. The purplish, pasty substance is made from pounding the roots of the taro plant.
Wailua State Wayside Park is just before Mile Marker #19 on the mountain side of the road. Take the stairs on the right for a fantastic view of Wailua and the taro fields below.
