Western Mountains Accommodations

Western Mountains Travel Guide
The Western Mountains is an area located in the most western part of the state of Maine, next to the border with New Hampshire. The region offers fun activities all year round, with winter sports being a particular favorite. Various condo rentals and vacation rental accommodations are available.

Getting a chalet rental accommodation during winter will give you access to an impressive total of six ski resorts in the area. If you are looking for the steepest slopes to carve, then check out Sugarloaf and Sunday River resorts. With drops of 860 m and 713 m respectively, these mountains are certain to satisfy even the most vertical-hungry skiers. Both mountains offer fifteen lifts each and a diverse catalogue of trails for beginners, experts and everyone in between. Sugarloaf and Sunday River resorts offer chalet rentals to keep you near the fun.

If you are looking for longer runs, make sure to check out Mt. Abram Ski Resort. With a longest trail of eight kilometers and five chair lifts, you’ll be skiing to your heart’s content. Lost Valley, Saddleback and Shawnee Peak are the three other ski resorts in the area offering a mix of trails and chalet rental accommodations.

But winter is not the only exciting time in the Western Mountains area. A condo rental or vacation rental lodging makes for a great get-away during summer, spring or fall. Make sure to drop by the city of Bethel where you can find a myriad of activities, many of which are available during all four seasons. Go hiking or biking on the land, or bust out the clubs and enjoy a day of golf. Take your fishing gear and pull a couple of big ones from a nearby lake or river, or go for a relaxing swim.

Grafton Notch State Park is located in the area and is offering exquisite natural vistas amid gorges and peaks. The park boasts having twelve of the most challenging miles within the entirety of the Appalachian Trail and a rewarding summit view at a height of over four thousand feet for those daring enough to hike to it. Some of the most popular locations in the park include the Screw Auger Falls, a twenty-foot waterfall situated along the Bear River in a small gorge. The Moose Cave lies within a forty-five-foot-deep canyon in the bedrock. Water running through the canyon temporarily disappears into the cave before reappearing on the other side. For a truly magical picnic experience, go to the Spruce Meadow Picnic Area and enjoy a picturesque view of Old Speck Mountain while you eat.

Owner direct offers the best selection of chalet rentals, vacation rentals, and any other type of accommodation in the Western Mountains area. Check out our vacation rentals today for the best deals!

Welcome Cavalier Cottage B&B awarded Superhost status by Airbnb 2017 Cavalier Cottage B&B awarded TripAdvisor’sReviews of Hotels, Flights and Vacation RentalsReviews of Hotels, Flights and Vacation Rentals Certificate of Excellence 2014 and 2017 Discover Cavalier Cottage B&B, a pet-friendly home away from your home and an attractive alternative to conventional hotels, motels and B&B’s. We warmly welcome visitors who come to this beautiful area of Western Massachusetts with or without their companion animals. Now in its sixth year, Cavalier Cottage has clearly answered a need for genuinely pet-friendly accommodations. When I opened the cottage in 2012, I could not have imagined the variety of interesting people, and animals, I would meet. Nestled at the base of the Charlemont hills and located on a very quiet country road, Cavalier Cottage is appointed with everything you’ll need to make your stay comfortable and enjoyable. More than one guest has commented that the cottage and its setting seem to have a special air of tranquility that works a kind of magic: Most pets settle right in with no sense of strangeness, and their human companions find themselves absorbing the atmosphere of peace in their surroundings. That doesn’t mean there’s nothing to do in this very special corner of New England. The area is a four-season vacation destination, from foliage time in the autumn, through ski season into spring hiking time and summer holidays. Cavalier Cottage is convenient to the scenic Mohawk Trail (Route 2) and many outdoor activities: There are great hiking trails, downhill and X-country skiing, snow shoeing, river rafting, tubing, zip line canopy tours, horseback riding, tennis, golf, biking, and rock climbing. The beautiful Massachusetts countryside, with its many quaint villages and towns, is also home to a great variety of iconic educational and cultural destinations, including MassMoCa, the Clarke Institute of Art and the Williams College Art Museum and many more. See the “Area” page of the website for more details about diversity of activities and attractions. As more guests have visited, many potential guests were unable to come because the dates they wanted were already booked. A fresh, contemporary 3-BR, 2 Bath house high on a heavily wooded hillside overlooking (and with frontage on) the Back River of the Sheepscot, which leads into Sheepscot Bay and eventually into the Atlantic Ocean.. The house offers three private bedrooms, two of which can compete to be called the "master" bedroom -- one up, one down, each with a queen bed and a glass door opening onto a deck overlooking the river. There is a full bath on each floor. The third bedroom upstairs has two twin beds and a full sleeper sofa. Overall there are sleeping accommodations for 8 people. There is also a "Pack-N-Play" for a baby if needed (please bring your own linens for the baby.) The house is surrounded by landscaped gardens reflecting the extraordinary diversity of plants and flowers that burst forth in Maine in late Spring as the days begin to lengthen. Follow the winding trail from the house down the hill and through the woods to a floating dock on the Back River of the Sheepscot. Look left (north) to see in the distance the Route 1 bridge connecting Wiscasset with Edgecomb and the Boothbay Region. Look right (south) to see the small bridge connecting the mainland with Westport Island, and beyond that bridge in the distance, Sheepscot Bay and eventually the Atlantic Ocean. Overhead you'll see cormorants, osprey, and occasionally eagles and red-tailed hawks, plying the river hunting for prey. Down at the water you'll find the rushing tide either in or out, as the Sheepscot is one of the great tidal rivers of Maine. (We don't recommend swimming off of the dock. As the river is deep and flows swiftly, and for most of the year is quite cold, we recommend that you swim instead at one of the state parks mentioned below.) White, sandy beaches are rare in Maine, but there are two state parks (Reid and Popham Beach State Parks) that offer long stretches of them, both just a short drive from Wiscasset. Wiscasset itself is one of Maine's most beautiful and historic towns, with many others a short distance including Boothbay Harbor, Edgecomb and Damariscotta across the aforementioned bridge to the northeast, and Bath, Brunswick, and Portland back down the coast to the southwest. Portland's Jetport (PWM) is the major regional airport serving the mid-coast area of Maine and is only one hour's drive from the property. Some of the best restaurants in Maine are within a half-hour drive. There are many other shopping opportunities, with Maine pottery being one of the regional specialties. The towns of Edgecomb and Damariscotta are both homes to artisans who turn out some of the most beautiful hand-painted pottery in the world. A must-do day trip is to the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens in Boothbay, to wander among breathtaking landscapes of trees, plants and flowers of every description, walk miles of trails through the woods and down to the river -- also called the Back River coincidentally, but the back branch of a different river than the Sheepscot. There is a lovely gift shop and excellent restaurant on the premises for lunch. Our goal is to make your stay as pleasant and comfortable as possible. You should need only to purchase the food and beverages you will need for your stay. The kitchen is well appointed and fully equipped. The house is equipped with Wi-Fi and satellite TV w/ 127 channels on a 48" HDTV. Upon arrival, easily access your home with a keyless secure door code; no need for an in-person key exchange. Your rental will be professionally cleaned and ready for you to enjoy. You can expect all comforts of a fine hotel, including shampoo, soaps, paper products, towels, and linens. Your home will include a HomeDroid tablet (electronic guest directory) providing specific home details, local suggestions, Wi-Fi access, TV instructions, and more.
