Mountain Views from Mountain Star. | 24 Feb 2013 |
We stayed at Mountain Star and found it ideal for a family stay at Whistler. The Mountain Star complex is at 4894 Painted Cliff Rd (see Google Earth) and the one we stayed at was one half of a duplex which they all seem to be. This meant we were spread over 3 floors with the bedroom on the top floor being very roomy with the two bedrooms on the ground floor being a little cramped. Also you hope you have quiet neighbours which we did. The lounge/dining room/kitchen is on the middle floor and has all mod cons. If you are a FTT (Frequent Toilet Traveller) like me you going to get a lot of exercise going up and down a lot of stairs - good for the leg muscles for skiing I suppose. The hot tub was a hit and also the gas fireplace was soothing in the evening. The shuttle is at the end of the street and runs frequently and if you have some groceries from the IGA a $10 cab ride will get you home. My only gripes were that there was no info on the appliances - took some time to realise that the oven was in ºF and not ºC - so much for metrics in Canada! Also the IGA food looked very cheap sold by the pound! The guide button on the remote worked once then it was memorise the channels - a list of channels would save a lot of channel hunting. For a family stay on the mountain I'd heartily recommend it. - Robert L., Buderim, Australia

Mountainstar. | 7 Jan 2013 |
The reservation and payment process went smoothly; check-in was simple and speedy; it was snowing and beautiful the day we arrived. Well, that was the good part. Mountainstar units are spacious and lovely, designed to accommodate a large group with high quality furnishings and extras such as private hot tubs, heated tile floors, granite counter tops, secure underground parking and internet/ cable. All at premium rates. This unit seemed no different than other well-maintained Mountainstar units I stayed in until we looked closer. It is so poorly maintained and lacks basics such as a corkscrew (good thing I carry one for emergencies, ha), frying pan lids, and oven mitts that I burned my hand while using their cookware and required an emergency room visit at great pain and expense. The kitchen was so filthy a cleaning crew was called back to scrape the crusted food off the stove and replace a broken coffee maker as well as clean the grease off the dishwasher and scrape the scraps of dried adhesive off the counter. Even a dirty sponge was left for us to wash dishes, not the usual new one in a wrapper. Cleaners missed the greasy yellow wads on the ceiling above the cooking area but the lighting was so dim that we just chose not to look. They also had to go get a mattress pad for the queen bed as it was made up without one! I loved the food marks and the water rings on all the glass tables including the bedside tables. Several key light bulbs were burned out and a nice maint. man came to replace at our request. The ice maker was inoperable when we arrived and several people tried to fix it, even scheduled an appliance repairman visit .... but we flipped some switches after everyone left and finally made it work, whew. The idea of no ice AND no corkscrew was downright scary! My favorite short-cut in this place is the large outdoor-type floodlight bulb screwed into a socket in the ceiling above the dining table-no fixture just a bulb. The holes from the missing pegs in the fireplace mantle and the dirty carpet complete the look. The good news is because the doctor recommended I see a burn specialist and we had to leave a day early, we contacted the manager and he refunded our last nights stay. Mountainstar units are comfortable and spacious but this unit needs some attention to detail and some serious maintenance (maybe a new cleaning company). It would have been nice if they cleaned and replaced BEFORE we arrived. Perhaps the owner should inspect his property once in awhile! If you don't mind paying premium prices for staying in a soiled place this is the one for you! - Dana H., Sammamish, USA
