Kapalua is one of the newest areas to be developed, located on the northwestern tip of the island. This former pineapple plantation was transfigured into a luxurious 1,650 acre tropical paradise situated along three miles of shoreline. The resort or Kapalua is not only among the ocean and mountains, it is also set amidst a 23,000 acre pineapple plantation operated by Maui Pineapple Company.

In 1991, Kapalua Bay ranked number one in a study of 650 beaches and gained worldwide attention. The survey was based on 50 physical, biological and human considerations, including texture and color of sand, frequency of breaking waves and degree of solitude.

Kapalua's three great golf courses have repeatedly won awards for excellence. The golf courses are certified by Audubon International as Audubon Cooperative sanctuaries. You can also enjoy horseback riding, or a wide variety of water sports including snorkeling. When the first Hawaiians settled here centuries ago, they grew taro in the fields and harvested fish from the bay. In 1836, Dwight Baldwin was granted 2,675 acres of land. Through royal grants, purchases, marriages and mergers the holdings grew to 24,500 acres in 1902. This land parcel was known as Honolua Ranch. Later, 20 acres of pineapples were planted and a cannery was constructed.

The company eventually merged with the Maui Pineapple Company and in 1969 became the Maui Land and Pineapple Company, the largest employer on Maui. Kapalua is committed to the preservation of the environment as it is surrounded by lush green pineapple fields, nature preserves and marine sanctuaries.

Pueome O Honokahua, one of Maui's most important cultural sites, is located in this area. This 14 acre preserve was once the site of fishing shrines and heiaus. The ancient Hawaiians worshiped their gods and made astronomical observations here.
