Lake Country is the collective name given to the beautiful communities of Okanagan Centre, Oyama, Carr’s Landing, and Winfield. It was incorporated in 1995. It is located in the Okanagan Valley region of British Columbia and is also part of the Central Okanagan Regional District, and of the Kelowna Metropolitan area. As the name implies, there are a number of lakes found in the vicinity of Lake Country, including Okanagan Lake which borders the western boundary of the municipality, Wood Lake situated between Oyama and Winfield, and the southern-most portion of Kalamalka Lake or Kal Lake located south of Vernon.
Lake Country is a popular vacation destination. It is a 5-hour drive from Vancouver, an 8-hour drive from the Alberta border and a five-minute drive from the country’s 10th busiest airport, Kelowna International Airport, making it very accessible to Canadian and foreign tourists alike. Coupled with its promise of a wide assortment of exciting and thrilling activities that go along with its four distinct seasons, it is no wonder Lake Country’s tourism is thriving.
There are many things to explore once you get to Lake Country. The best way to begin is by trying out a couple or more of their world-class outdoor recreation opportunities starting with beach combing. Book one of those beach rentals, put the bathing suits and sunscreen on, and be ready for a day of sunbathing and under-the-sun adventures. Many lovely beaches await, with the most recommended ones being Kal Beach and Cosens Bay Beach (in the center of Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park). After basking in the sun, it is time to hit the water. Go for a swim or, for a “faster” experience, take oars and paddle a canoe across Okanagan Lake. For those who are lucky enough to visit during the winter season, you can find yourself in one of these cabin rentals and experience the tingling winter temperature, the powdery snow and the range of exhilarating ski and snowboarding activities that Lake Country offers. For the sporty types, stay in one of those golf vacation rentals and try your hand on one of the many Lake Country golf courses, starting with Aspen Grove Golf Course near Wood Lake. For those traveling with children, the Trethewey Splash Park, where the children can enjoy and take a break from the heat, is a perfect holiday stop. A pet friendly rental would definitely be a good choice for an accommodation if travelling with pets.
Apart from being a top all-season’s destination, Lake Country is also a perfect art lovers’ destination as it offers an interesting mix of galleries, museums, festivals and exhibits that art enthusiasts will enjoy. Begin by getting to know a bit more about the community’s interesting history at the Lake Country Museum or check out the impressive art display at the Lake Country Art Gallery.
Before leaving this lovely community, make sure to make a quick stop to check out the wares at the Farmers’ Market at Swallwell Park, where vendors sell garden produce, baked goods and other treasures which will serve as a souvenir of your wonderful trip.
