Perfect beach home
Our second year here was great, the home is exactly as described... Very well appointed and roomy, well stocked. We had plenty of space for our 3 generations. The beach was just a short walk away. Very clean, had plenty of supplies, towels, kitchen stuff. Am returning next year!

Nice location but house needs improvements
The location of the house is great. The backyard is perfect if you have children. The path the beach is very nice but the last step is a 3 foot drop and could be quite difficult for some people. Getting back up is also hard! The house itself is funky and quirky. The wifi hardly worked. The only bathroom downstairs is in a bedroom so this may or may not work for your family. The towels are old and tattered. One of the blankets on the bed upstairs smelled of urine. We made the most of it but would not stay here again.

Thank you for staying at MCKINNON'S BEACH HOUSE. Thank you for your feedback. We are saddened to learn that your experience was less than satisfactory..
We are glad you enjoyed the perfect location and the backyard!.
We are sorry you experienced issues with the wifi. Slow wifi can be a common issues with beach and ocean front homes due to location. Sometimes un plugging and re plugging the modem in can help. We always encourage guests to voice their questions and concerns to our team upon discovery, as we understand that sometimes unexpected things may occur. We assure you that if given the opportunity, we work to address and rectify any and all concerns that may be affecting our guest’s experience.
We have brought to the attention of our Housekeeping department about the old towels and will suggest to the owner to replace them. We bring all heavy duty laundry- blankets, comforters etc to our office to launder in our heavy duty washers. We assure that this isolated issue will not happen again.
We hope for the opportunity to welcome you back again for an improved experience!

McKinnon House was a great location. Was disappointed in that couch was listed as a sleeper sofa and it was not, resulting in 2 people having to sleep on the floor. Beds were very uncomfortable and kitchen table needs to be replaced. Also, the outdoor garbage can was full when we arrived and two extra bags of garbage were left on the ground nearby.
Response from Sunset Vacation Rentals; Monday, July 12, 2021
Thank you for staying at McKinnon's Beach House and leaving you. We apologize for the inconvenience with not being able to accommodate sleeping for 2 of your guests There is a Futon in the living room which can sleep 2 people and we have corrected the description on our website stating the couch is a sleeper sofa. Thank you for letting us know about the kitchen table- the table has been repaired.
All of our homes have have a weekly trash pick up services designated on certain days. During the busy summer months when all of the homes are back to back, there may be a lapse between the last and next pick up. If brought to our attention, we are happy to send out maintenance out to pick up trash if there is an overflow between stays.
We appreciate and value your feedback and hope that you can come back soon for a future stay,

Nice roomy old house
It’s a great location and has some updates. The kitchen didn’t have a griddle but luckily we brought our own. Other than the griddle I think the kitchen is well stocked. I It needs more garbage service. We arrived Thursday and the garbage was full. Garbage service wasn’t until Monday. So we had all our garbage from Thursday through Wednesday to try to fit in a small garbage bin so we had several extra bags. The beach access is made with some wobbly drift wood so use at your own risk. Other than that the house is nice and roomy enough for everyone to comfortably fit. There’s no AC or fans but luckily for us the weather was cool when we were there. There’s a beautiful large deck on the street side that’s wonderful. Nice upper deck to view the ocean. Lots of nice things about this place too and the rental company is helpful so don’t wait to call them. We have stayed there before and will stay again.

Thank you for staying and leaving your review for Mckinnon's Beach House! All of our houses are stocked with the basic cooking supplies , utensils, dishware, home does have a griddle, it could have been tucked away in a different location in the kitchen but glad to hear yo brought your own :-)
We are so sorry regarding the garbage being full upon arrival. Unfortunately the trash pick up is only weekly in Rockaway. If our guests notify us, we are happy to send our maintenance out to pick up any overflow trash in between the weekly pick ups. Most houses here on the Coast do not have AC as we have very minimum hot days and luckily staying in ocean front or beach front homes when there is an unbearable hot day, the nice marina air blows in bringing cooling temperatures..
We appreciate and value your feedback and hope to have you come back for a future stay soon!

Nice stay but could be amazing with a few small tweaks
Family had not vacationed/traveled since pre-COVID and we just finished a family funeral and NEEDED to get away. McKinnon house has mostly everything a family needs...except a couple things could be enhanced. <br/>Upstairs rooms get colder at night so we grabbed one of the comforters from closet (goose down) and threw it over us. In morning noticed that comforter was badly stained, looked like it had mud or feces on it, and one corner covered in mold. A bathroom window had a garbage bag and towel in place to stop rain and moisture coming in. Could also put a inexpensive TV in living room but there is none.<br/>Lamp in corner of living room also had entire socket pulled out and just laying over...could be electrical hazard as well as dangerous for someone looing for the switch. <br/>Besides that, the stay was nice. Weather for the coast was PERFECT (stormy, rainy, hail, wind, and sun!!) For the price the size was great...for the Price it could have been better or lower cost to accommodate the imperfections. <br/>Also view from top floor was great but should consider making the small room a sitting area rather than area for 2 small beds. barely any view from bottom floor

A relaxed, old beach cabin feel
Beach house is old, maybe 50-70 years old. It has a large, mowed backyard with the shrubs beyond it cut low so visibility of the ocean is great. Easy access to the beach down a path from the backyard. House has nice layout but everything is rustic. Appliances work great except some of the old-fashioned stove burners didn't work, amenities are plentiful in the kitchen, windows and door to upper deck open and close with difficulty. Very large dining table easily seats six, but takes up a lot of kitchen space. Furniture is comfortable but aged with a large tear. Lots of games, small stereo sound system, and a piano. Was not as clean as we like, but okay. House is as described and was great for our needs. We will go back next year. Dealt with rental agency all by email, and lock box was on the front door so we didn't have to pick up keys. We had no problems while we were there.

Please love me a little more!!
This house has tons of character and is a charming older home. It was very pet-friendly and we appreciated the furniture covers. The view from the upper deck on the beach side is great and the new deck surface on the street side is fantastic. The big yard is really nice for kids and pets.<br/>However, there are several things that really need some TLC before I could recommend this house to friends or return myself.<br/>1. From a safety standpoint, the electrical outlets are old and whatever plug you are trying to use will probably fall out. One of the lights in the kitchen needs to be clicked on at least twice to come on at all.<br/>2. The upper deck on the beach side desperately needs a new surface and at least on of the rails is not attached at all on the bottom (a child or pet could easily fall off).<br/>3. The kitchen was well stocked with utensils, etc., but the toaster hardly worked at all and the stovetop burners were not working.<br/>4. The main floor bathroom and bedroom were infested with sugar ants. The west wall of the bedroom was covered in cobwebs and the south wall, carpet and ceiling above had obviously had a nasty water leak. The shower floor was slippery and the shower curtain was interestingly hung. The shower head was on of the best I have ever used ! The jacuzzi tub in the upstairs bathroom didn’t seem to work.<br/>5. The path to the beach was very useable until the very bottom where there was a very difficult, long step down. Some of our party could not use that access and had to find a more user friendly one.<br/>In its present condition we would not return to this house. If these issues were addressed we would definitely come back.<br/>We had 9 people in our party and there was plenty of room for all of us to spread out and be comfortable.

Nice older beach house, a few problems though
House was clean which was appreciated and well stocked with towels, sheets etc. for an older home it is well maintained. Appliances are older but sufficient. Close to the beach however end of path down to sand was washed out, steep, and we had to climb on hands and knees up and down path. Also path itself not maintained, over grown with spiked plants. Had cuts on legs from walking through. Not pleasant. Other big issue was both showers had very slow drains which meant standing in 2-3 inches of dirty water while bathing. We only had six people cannot imagine how gross it would have been with more. Tried washing the basins out but such slow drains stuff wouldn't go down. Unfortunately a lot of sand in hair etc even after wiping off before going in house. Ends up in tub. Owners would be smart to put in a simple outside shower to hose off after going to the beach. Would save their plumbing. We would not rent again unless problems above were fixed, which is a shame because it was otherwise decent.

It is precariously placed on blocks and plywood. Thank goodness we were able to move it successfully. There is not a light off the back porch, which I think is dangerous. The access to the beach is not easy (big drop off that my 6' 2" hubby was not even comfortable with). The fan did not work in the shower on the main level, or over the range in the kitchen. (The main floor shower is enclosed in all wood, which without a working vent is prone to mold.) We lost power 10 times the first night for no reason whatsoever. We will not stay here again.

Labor Day with the family in thee McKinnon's Beach House
Our vacation in Rockaway was fabulous. The location of this beach house was perfect with great access to the beach and walking distance to downtown. There were a few things that could be improved upon so I am happy to have the opportunity to mention them at this time. <br/>The hot tub is merely a jacuzzi bath tub and should be marketed as such. The beds were not in good shape and the toilet seat was broken in the upstairs bathroom. It is a funky place but we do like funky and it did make for a great holiday family vacation. thank you

Pretty worn down
Some beach houses are a little older, cozy and comfortable and showing signs of years of loving use. This place goes way beyond that, however, and is worn down and shabby.<br/><br/>If you are looking for a big house near the beach for a decent price, and if you are willing to overlook some major flaws, then you'll be ok here.<br/><br/>Otherwise, be forewarned. The dishwasher is rusted out with broken racks and a soap dispenser that does not open. The dining room table is perma-sticky with chairs that are held together with plastic bags tied around the legs. The tv is perched atop cinder blocks on a rickety rolling stand. Behind the folding mirrors in the upstairs bathroom are open electrical outlets with exposed wires. The path to the beach is overgrown, painfully scraping bare legs. The upstairs shower rod falls down with the slightest touch, and the water temperature wildly alternates between scalding and freezing. Fans in both bathrooms do not work and the window in the upstairs bathroom is taped shut. The bars along the fridge doors frequently fall off. The living room couches are ripped with stuffing exposed. <br/><br/>Our group made this place work, and perhaps yours will too, but you should know what you're getting int.

Great location, good deal on the beach. We were disappointed that the wireless connection didn't work, and when we called the property manager to try to resolve the issue, they promised to call back and never did. We relying on having internet as one person in our party needed to take his boating license test in order to go on a planned boat outing during the stay. Also, we were overcharged for our pets, but the property manager did resolve that when it was pointed out.

The ordor when we entered the house was over whelming. It smelled like dogs had been wetting in the house. We opened all the windows immediately to air it out. The dish washer had many broken prongs and the stove burners did not sit properly on the stove which made it very hard to cook. There were many cracked and broken plates that should be replaced. The cooking utensils are in very bad condition and need to be replaced. The refrigerator worked well. I would recommend the property for the location only but would not give it an overall good rating. I repeat again the odor was over whelming.

I wanted to take an opportunity to give some feedback on our rental at the McKinnon house for the past 5 nights. I was quite disappointed with the condition of the home during our stay. The odors were very strong throughout the house, we purchased Febreeze<br/> to try to deal with this. The fact that there were no screens on any windows would not allow us to open the windows for airing out - unless we wanted a lot of bugs. My main concern with the house however, is the disrepair and very shoddy construction /and<br/> or remodeling that has taken place on the premises. I have some serious concerns about the way in which the downstairs shower is installed/vented through the chimney, condition of the upstairs and front entrance porches with dry rot, upstairs shower "rod"<br/> made of a plastic pvc pipe and not extending around the entire tub area. Some of the ways in which this property has been "repaired" or "remodeled" clearly have not been done by a licensed contractor or in compliance with code. As a rental property, this is<br/> a safety issue. The ceiling also seems to have some serious leaking issues as it rained quite hard one evening while we were there and clearly water was coming in through the roof area upstairs. As a courtesy, I wanted to let you know what kind of a property<br/> you are representing. I will be following up with some of the safety issues I mentioned so you may wish to communicate these concerns to the owners. It is my feeling that it should not be used as a rental until some of these issues are corrected.<br/>

The carpets have all been shampooed to help eliminate the odor. This is an older beach house and does have a slight musty smell to it but we do have air fresheners throughout. Ocean front homes do not generally have screens on the windows because it blocks the ocean views. Thank you for letting us know about the construction. We will be looking into it.

Comfortable Family House
This was a very comfortable house to stay in, with lots of space and a huge yard to play in. It feels secluded, yet is only about a mile from the stores in town. The beach access is the easiest we've ever had in several years of renting beach houses - just right through the bushes beyond the backyard to the sand. The beach itself is sandy for miles; if you want tide pools, you can travel south a few miles. We did wish for a few more blankets for the beds/futon, but on the whole we really enjoyed this house.

A Great House For Family Groups Who Like Rustic
Our Family of 12 (Grandparents, sisters, husbands and kids) stayed here in July for 7 nights. We loved the location, and the house was great. It is very rustic so don't expect granite counters and white walls. We had read some reviews where people complained about the table being sticky so we threw in a table cloth, problem solved. The only items worth mention was the upstairs bathtub could have used a good bleaching and there really isn't enough seating in the family room for all 12 of us but we spent most of time on the beach anyway. They don't have a fire pit outside so we built fires on the beach and we brought a folding table so we could eat and play games outside. We had a wonderful week in a house that was a great value for the location, the number of people it could sleep and the ability for us to bring our pets.

Love this house! Love the location to the beach! Also love the privacy of the house! However, the house needs some things. Kitchen ware that is updated is very needed. Sharp and good knife set, cutting board and good set of pots. It can be a bit frustrating to make a big meal here. The bedrooms all have nice beds except for one upstairs ocean view room. It needs to be updated desperately! The two small beds are extremely uncomfortable and bedding is just plain bad. We have to draw straws each year to see who gets stuck with this room. great location, private and wind free back yard. That's the only redeeming quality of this property. The house was extremely worn and dirty. The floors, carpets, and especially throw rugs were filthy. Dead bugs in bath tub & on window sills.I do not recommend this house for families with young children because there are no screens on the 2nd floor windows and no secure lock on the upstairs door - it is difficult to even shut, as well as railings inside and out that are not code and young ones could fall through. There is also a very thin sheet of plywood that blocks off a 1 story drop from the upstairs to the main floor. The laundry room is in the basement which is reminiscent of a horror film where you scream "Don't go down there"! Also you must bring your own lawn chairs and any other outdoor needs as the yard and garage are bare of those little extras most beach houses are equipped with. Bring extra blankets and pillows, might even want to bring your own sheets. Recognized a set of sheets I had in the 80's. Also had to use highly scented candles, not just because it's pet friendly, it's an ingrained overall "old" smell. We would not rent this house again. Yuk.
